Malkovich is one of those few actors who'll make me want to watch a film -

I'd also nominate Forbidden Planet and possibly The Day The Earth Stood Still.
Like Metropolis, Forbidden Planet is still fresh, even 60 years later
. His other film STALKER is a bit bizarre as the radiation may have killed Tarkovsky in real life.
One of the eeriest films I've seen - brilliant though.
There were some great British Sci Fi films in the 50' s about a rocket scientist, Bernard Quatermas, written by Nigel Kneale which were years ahead of their time and still really watchable. Quoted as hugely influential by the likes of Spielberg and Ridley Scott.

@machpants agreed but i think they'd say you can have empire without hope
probably get shot down but id throw in Jurassic Park, cutting edge technology that still looks pretty good the better part of 30 years later and quite literally science Fiction, just not set in the future or in space

Metropolis is a movie I have always been meaning to watch. It looked interesting since I first saw the video for Radio Ga Ga.
If you use IMDb ratings then Inception should be in a Top 10.
I recommend Metropolis, watched it about 30 years ago, which is still relatively recently. I think it was a colourized version? Anyway, still disturbing.
Metropolis Redux is the best version out there. A kiwi spent 2 years restoring it, combining bits from different versions (film, dvd, vhs) to combine the most complete version. This is primarily based on Georgio Moroder's 1980's version (colourized with modern soundtrack).
I watched it with the kiwi's production notes as subtitles, and that was awesome - I learnt a lot more about the different versions and the process of film editing
Interview with the creator here:

@stockcar86 thanks! I think I have only seen the 1980s version.

The problem seems to be finding a platform that has it in their catalogue.

Sorry to deviate back to the thread topic, so wife and I went out and watched a movie on the weekend at the movies (and not at home) and then went to a restaurant and bar..woohoo freedom..anyhoo
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Latest in MCU universe, well just before the Eternals starts up. Enjoyable kung fu movie with a few laughs. In my point of view didnt get all the casting right (didnt agree with awkafina as the friend) and hard for me to even watch Simu Liu in this role given I had seen him a lot in "kim's Convienience" which made the movie more in the light fun action type of flick, rather than a slightly more serious action one. Still was fun with some links to previous more onbscure MCU characters during and potential future link ups by meeting Wong, Danvers and Banner at the end mid credits. Wouldnt even be surprised to see if there is a link to "the Eternals"

@bayimports I thought the opposite, Liu and Awkafina were perfect casting. What is weird is that I didn't realise Liu wasn't Korean even though my Korean friend told me his Korean was terrible in the odd times he spoke it in the show.
I probably agree with your rating, would have probably given higher if not for the ...
SPOILER COMING, STOP READING IF YOU DON"T WANT THE ENDING PARTIALLY SPOILED. ALSO WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SPOILER FUNCTION?
... the Marvel style CGI ending made worse by having bloody dragons.

lol, dont get me wrong they probably added to the light hearted fun but awkwafina I just find annoying. I like Lui, in fact if I hadnt had seen the sitcom I would have thought he was great casting, so go figure ha ha.. just hard to watch in such a different role so soon. Spoilers dont work anymore, so had to create an illusion of one
agree with you about the dragon although they could technically argue its not in the same realm.Still enjoyable to watch though

I'm not a fantasy dude, Game of Thrones would have been an all time great show without the dragons.

@nepia so you are ok with the undead, raising people from the dead and seeing things through the eyes of a raven, but you draw the line at dragons...
I draw the line at all fantasy, the dragons was my stand in for all the fantasy aspects of the show. I will be more specific next time.

I loved Quatermas! Spooked by it too.

The bit that annoyed me was how often the main dude sat back and watched - when he was riding the friendly dragon as it had it's soul sucked out of it, he just watched. Then when his old man was getting fcked up - he just sat there and watched again - dude, come on!
Also, why have a dragon if all it can do its make waves - shouldn't dragons be able to make fire now and again???
But agree, all-in-all, was fun, kids loved it too

@nepia Well, you live in a country with bearded dragons.

ha ha I agree with all of that and that his dad lived for over a 1000 years and still died while wearing rings that supposedly kept him immortal...
