Argentina v Ecuador for the right to play NZ in play-off.

    Oct 10, 2017  /  Football

Ecuador 1-3 Argentina: World Cup 2018 qualifier – as it happened

Ecuador 1-3 Argentina: World Cup 2018 qualifier – as it happened

A stunning hat-trick from Lionel Messi ensured Argentina qualified automatically for the World Cup with victory in Quito

I'm hoping for an Argentina win and a Messi visit to Wellington. Although, I think I'll be out of town for the play-off anyway. So maybe I should back Ecuador so I don't get FOMO envy at the 35,000 $&@&s getting to see him and the Argies.

Sadly Argentina look far more likely to finish 4th or 6th than 5th but I'm hoping for them to come to NZ. What a game that would be. I think a draw gives Argentina the most likely path to NZ.

Confirmed as Peru. Surely preferable to Argentina or Columbia from an All Whites potential qualifying point of view?

A bit of carnage regarding the Peru v Columbia match if true. South Americans seem to be level headed regarding their football so I don't expect much outcry.....................................................

    Italy fail to qualify.

    Sweden beat them.

I'd imagine the Italian coach will need some serious security detail.

First time since 1958 they haven't made the finals. They had a tough group - same group as Spain - but they have been pretty poor since Conte left to take over Chelsea.

3 second legs of qualifiers and all of them have finished 0-0. Both NZ and Aus games were 0-0. It's thrilling stuff ...

But if it's in the RWC final all bets are off 😉 I have on occasion engaged in a boo welcome for the visiting team. It's part of home field advantage to let them know they have entered the lion's den

Sure, but there is a huge difference between booing the players running out the tunnel and screaming and yelling during their anthem.

You don't see a difference between booing opposition players when they run onto the field and disrespecting their anthem? I agree both are rude, but one is far worse than the other. Imagine if NZ fans, led by McCaw, had screamed during La Marsellais during the RWC final.

Back during my uni days we felt it was our duty to give the ref and the opposition shit. The so called '16th man'

I agree, general booing is part of the theatre of the match, booing during the anthems is actually disrespectful ... and I hate the anthems.

Hmmm, how did I wind up involved in a soccer thread? Backs.out.slowly.

They point is they aren't as poke. I stand corrected if screaming during the anthem together with the team captain is something rugby fans regularly engage in.

@Hooroo Nobody said that rugby fans are never classless. Reference was simply made to an incident of particularly appalling behaviour that is unfortunately all too common in soccer.

Do you believe that rugby fans are just as bad?

I don't recall ever seeing a rugby game where the fans

    1. Make monkey sounds at particular players
    2. Throw food or coins at players on the pitch
    3. Throw piss at each other in the stands
