I wonder if they split the national team and coach awards to appease everybody?

But some of the winners in other categories were surprises to me.

I agree with @Kirwan Much easier to take a good team and culture and keep them going a second year than sweep up the bones off the floor and then go and win the comp

Alama took a basket case team that was on the verge of relegation, rebuilt from the ground up, and managed to get a team spirit and resilience instilled that hasn't been sighted in Auckland teams for decades. Not only that, they won respect from the generally disinterested public. An amazing achievement.

It was a lower level than Super. However, I'd argue there were a few coaches who could win the comp with the Super cattle that the Crusaders had. By comparison, I don't know if other coaches would have been able to achieve what the Auckland coaches did, in teh time they had, with the players they had.

@bovidae talk back is full of people suggesting there should be a male and female award rather than the Tremain one being for both.

@taniwharugby I seem to remember that the Kel Tremain Memorial used to be awarded to one of the winners of the other individual categories on the night, and they never publically announced the nominees prior to the awards evening. A bit like the Halberg supreme award.

So have a male and female POTY award, and together with the other winners (SR, M10 Cup, Tom French), one of them wins the overall award.

Don't they match up in the head to head categories aside from TJ over Romano?

In fairness - i'm not sure Papali'i was eligible for the age grade player for the NZR Awards as he was age grade last year (NZ U20s) not this year. However - Plummer would have been a better choice over Christie in those awards anyway.
