My well documented ALB bias aside, why is Crotty on the bench?
Given how the ABs play the game, having the "safe organiser" on the bench seems a strange move.

I think that with the current setup there has to be specialist midfield cover. Personally I think ALB is a 'better' impact player but maybe they are looking for better leadership and decision making added into the end mix as well. All very well chucking on impact and speed but if the right authority isn't there to call the shots you can get the problems we had in the loss.
Or it could just be that on injury cover alone they feel more comfortable with Crotty on the bench.

So that if he comes on with 30 to go and is immediately injured, then the ABs get to practice being under stress?

I don't need stress practice.

Because if we are down 5 and itโs the 79th minute he can score the game tying try in the 83rd minute ๐

After all the non Cantabs have walked him to the line?
Based on the last SA game they would need to get him close as he only made 2 metres per carry in that one. In fact, looking at his stats in that game I'm surprised he has even been selected. 60% tackle completion for someone that is supposedly there as a good defender?
I'll give it to you that the opposition jerseys are green though.
-
@act-crusader Seems like the ABs are shifting from trying to blow the boks off the park to playing test match rugby.
Part of the thinking might be that the boks are getting good change (and a fair amount of points) forcing errors from teams trying to run at them in situations where it isn't on. Lesser Barrett's throw in, ALB's intercept to Kolbe, Beale's howler to Dyantyi. Take those away and force them to play from deep.
Crotty fits better than ALB in that gameplan.
And If I supported the ABs, I'd much rather have Crotty on the park in a one score game at the death than ALB. As a bok supporter, though I wish we had the luxury of leaving players like ALB and Laumape out of the squad.

@crucial hahaha, fair point. But You had ALB on before that and when he left the pitch the boks led by 10ish. 7 of which he gifted to the boks.
Are you saying you wouldn't have won without us giving you a gift?
Fair enough

@smuts said in Springboks V All Blacks:
@crucial Obviously we couldn't have beaten the mighty all blacks ourselves. No one beats you on their own merit by playing better than you. Hasn't and won't happen. 10 years on this board has taught me that
Your wisdom is great.

You mean the passage where Read and the two Franks were the most prominent....

Obviously I meant the other parts
(all non-Cantabs anyway)

Goodhue makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
Is that you Mr Mexted?
-
Looks a really strong pack - even without BBBR. Getting to the stage where there's strength in depth in most positions for RWC2019
Only concern is midfield - ALB, SBW, Crotty and Goodhue are all good - but it'd be good to have a settled combination

Noun, Cruden, Ben Smith weโre all more prominent than Read. The Thug brothers were definitely prominent though, one of them even wound up at first receiver at one stage.

@victor-meldrew All well and good to have a settled combination but much can happen between now and Japan - two of those players might not even be at the WC

Still makes me feel warm and fuzzy remembering the Franks's cleanouts when they came on. Really helped take the game away from the Oirish.
