Classic Chiefs, 15 minutes to go so they blow a 12-point lead at home with a man up and their former first five as ref.

    Weber > A Smith

@Bones I think he's a good ball carrier for a lock, but not for a backrower.

Think he certainly holds his own, as do the AB selectors. Happy for him to move into lock when Squire is back - Dickson to the bench.

I don't think he has the kind of ball carrying ability to offset the lack of ball carrying ability of his backrow partners. Wouldn't be surprised if Frizell starts at 6 in the next game.

Basically this is the result of going into a game that was always going to be close without a goalkicker.

    WELL FUCK!

Couldnt see the game live so just tuned into Aussie foxtel for the advertised game, 4 and a half hours after the game and the opening panel segment tells the FUCKING SCORE!!!
    before the replay!
    at the advertised time!
    Then they show fucken highlights!

Fucken useless fluffybunnies. Hope all Aussie rugby dies as punishment for such incompetence and disdain for rugby traditions.
    Fuck em!

    So we won huh?
    Cool. Might watch that now

I went to the game. Leger did pretty well i thought tbh. Nanai-Seturo looked dangerous and will be dangerous on the wing outside a seasoned 10. Unlucky chiefs didn't win. Pretty gutted but big learning curve.

Tomkinson has apparently been calling the UK all night trying to get someone to make him an Owen Farrell mask for when he is allowed to play again.

Two teams each carrying a lot of guys who are either green to this level or not up to it, showing first round rust. Probably can't read much into it.

Lomax had a very good game. He scrummed well and was outstanding in the loose. Is he developping into the best THP in NZ ?

Now that's a fucking fine win away, with 14 ultimately in a clear display of mental superiority.

    Played in Hamilton wannit? 😁

Pleased to hear that none of you want anything to do with woeful Whitelock. Good, we'll keep his tackling, cleanouts and lineouts then. His obvious leadership from the red card was as good as you get. He was front and centre guiding the team throughout a perfectly played and executed final push for a win. Superb stuff, wouldn't swap him for anyone.

You watch Coltman's try as if he's in your team and you'll realise that Brad Webber's forearms have a bigger surface area than a full size rugby ball.

I see the sun is shining today in Hamilton, it's a beautiful day to celebrate the joy that comes with the start of the rugby season.

God bless our great game eh fellas?

@Bones & Highlanders, fucken handy win that eh bro? 😏

Wow! That was so a try

Meh. No clear grounding. Hooker decides to run straight at half back and gets made to look like a dick. I can abide the decision.

Doesn’t need to be clear. It was try on field call so it had show it definitely wasn’t grounded

    This.

I don't think it was a try but he needed clear evidence it wasn't grounded.

some fucking interesting blocking routes being run by the highlanders. When i said i wanted a longer NFL season...

    Fuck you Weber you spaz

    This is fucking awful.

@Crucial has been hot on this in 6N thread.

I've not watched any 6 Nations but clearly the Hughlanders have.

Needs a law change, or stricter interpretation.

What the fuck is the line of highlanders standing in the defense line in front of the ball ?

    Needs more repeating.

I don't see why Marshall is getting hate for saying someone should not be forced to leave the field for a complete accident. If cards worked, wouldn't there be less head collisions now and less cards?

    Wasn't an accident.

If that is a red, then Orbyn Ledger should take a seat for his high tackle on Frizell's try. He grabbed Frizell and pulled him down by the neck. The fact Frizell is going into score a try shouldn't matter if Tomkinson got no leeway for the way Retallick went into that contact.

Why the fark did Leger not kick any goals? He's good otherwise, and kicking out of hand was great, so why not kicking from the tee? Fark the lack of a recognised or even halfway decent goalkicker cost us big time tonight. We totally bloody shat the bed when BBBR got broke. Some fucking one needs to tell them to collectively keep their shit together for the last 20. And get a hooker that can hit a barn door in the last play. And get a goalkicker. Cooper you muppet. FFS.

Some of Aaron Smith's Highlanders team-mates were even wondering where his dummy came from.

Known for his crisp distribution, the 82-test All Blacks halfback instead pulled off a feign for the ages, as he snuck over for the match-winning try against the Chiefs in the Super Rugby season opener in Hamilton on Friday night.

With his side hot on attack and four points down, Smith arrived at a ruck close to the goal-line, composed himself, then threw a big dummy left and jinked his way back past Jesse Parete and Michael Allardice to plant the ball down.

And it's that dummy which the experienced campaigner said had been a real focus in pre-season.

"Some of the boys are like 'where'd that come from'," Smith said.

"We've got a young halfback down in the Highlanders at the moment and he's been doing it all pre-season with me around. He's got me a couple of times. He's been really pushing me around that and making me look at different parts of my game.

"So that one goes to Folau Fakatava, he's the man. He's been dummying everyone at camp, and it just sort of happened."

Fakatava - the 19-year-old Hawke's Bay representative out of Hastings Boys' High School - is yet to play Super Rugby, but it's not a bad wrap to get from someone of the calibre of Smith.

    .

I hope Fakatava gets plenty of opportunity this season. The sooner he gets game time, the better. Can't wait to see how he develops at a higher level, and whether and how fast he'll jump the queue in black in the next few years!
Even without my black-and-white eye patch on, I think it won't take long until he'll be on the Highlanders bench instead of Hammington, who didn't impress.
