Head Coach, Aaron Mauger, has named an experienced side with 74-game veteran lock, Tom Franklin, gaining his second run on start for the season and Marty Banks again will steer the ship at 10. An injury to Waisake Naholo gives speedster and local crowd favourite Matt Faddes an opportunity to display his skills. A strong bench, including All Blacks Elliot Dixon and Jackson Hemopo, features the exciting, young halfback Folau Fakatava and midfielder Rob Thompson, who is back after a six-week injury layoff.

  • The Hurricanes coaches have completely lost it. Now Jordie at 13 again. It's round 8 and this is the 4th position he'll be playing in. If Matt Proctor is fit, he should play at 13. 🤦♂

It's almost as if they want to jeopardise his ability to play for the All Blacks.

Time to write this season off. Forwards are too small, BB is playing like a lil bitch and the backs are impodent against a proper defence. Wish I'd recorded more games from 2015 (not the final Highlander bastards) and 2016 to take the sting off. Unfortunately it appears Red Peak's biggest fan was actually right about this season.

  • Dang Aso gone again? Such an unlucky run with injuries.

  • I'm so over Plumtree and his pathetic selections - we should be doing better but this idiot keeps picking the same players and expects different results.

    • Blackwell tries hard but is too small for a lock - how many games will it take to sink into Plumtree's noggin?
    • Prinsep really is ineffective at this level - they must have something against Ben Nicholas, surely he is a better no8 than Prinsep.
    • Lam is horrible on defence and only looks good going forward - the Crusaders showed once again that Lam is useless when it comes to the crunch, average under the high ball and clueless when he is on the back foot.

  • @Yeetyaah Yeah, this was the latest I saw from Aso on instagram.

  • @Canes4life I blame Jason Holland for the stupid stuff that is going on in the backline. He's never been great in his selections from what I've seen from U18, NZ Schools etc etc as well.

Although, I wonder whether there have been any messages from the ABs selectors about Jordie playing multiple positions.

Lam really is a flat-track bully isn't he? Good thing the AB selectors recognised this.

  • @Stargazer I don't see the point either in having Holland and Spencer on the books. Get rid of Holland and while they are at it they need to release Cron and Watt aswell - we need a fresh perspective in the forwards.

Going back to Holland, all the Canes seem to have in their arsenal is kicking the ball back to the opposition. In 2015/16 when they were playing vintage rugby the Canes almost ran the ball from anywhere. Now all they do is kick the bloody pill away at almost every opportunity - it just seems like they are trying to be too safe - unfortunately playing it safe isn't in the Canes DNA.

I feel for JB, he is young and probably just wants to nail down one position, however these twits are hellbent on ruining any confidence the young fella has by chopping and changing him every week.

Tana has passed on his idiotic selection tendencies from the Blues.

Was really surprised the Canes signed Prinsep, one of those players who probably puts up awesome numbers in the gym but lacks a bit of hardness. Watching him at club level you always noticed him (but not for his playing ability).

I would have expected Bedwell-Curtis to get more starts this year? I was a bit disappointed that the Crusaders let him go and then signed Tom Sanders.

Agree about Lam, He let in 2 tries on the weekend with his terrible defense.

  • @SammyC Tom Sanders was already signed, last year. He's just injured all the time.

Yeah I know that, I worded my post wrong. The timing is irrelevant to me though ....I thought it was a shit decision to sign him and then have to release bedwell-Curtis

  • Is Jordie also covering 10?

  • @pukunui I'd expect TJP (except the goal kicking).

  • When will they put Bidwell-Curtis at 8 instead of do nothing make no metres Prinsep, I don’t understand the selections

  • Is Gareth Evans still injured ?

  • Pretty handy bench that, but fear we've conceded the game already with the double strike of Hammington-Li.

  • @pukunui Yep also number 8 and lock.

  • Hurricanes were after Whetton for this season, I wonder if he will move to them for more game time?

  • @Tim The ex Harbour lock?

These coaches are completely hopeless. Agree on all these points. But after the disaster last week Plumtree still felt the team was on the right track.

Its a shame really. Canes won the competition and instead of building on this they have thrown it out the window with poor conditioning of players (= injuries), poor recruitment, a poor attack coach etc. Last week it was like a well coached side against a side who had just been thrown together and weren't really interested in playing. It was a terrible performance. Re Jordie. He's not a wing. He wants to play 2nd of FB. Anyway life is what it is. Expecting wellington or the Canes to be consistently a top team is it seems not going to happen

    @Tim The ex Harbour lock?

He played for Auckland for our Mitre 10 win, and was excellent. Was disappointed we didn't get him to the Blues.

  • @mikey07 Yep, Jack Whetton. He's at the Highlanders this year, and was supposed to start against the Crusaders.

  • @Tim He probably should have gone there.

  • No matter who we bring in as lock cover, Plumtree will still pick midget as lock.

  • Canes locks are to Plumbtree what Solomona Kata is Kearney.

  • If only we kept NAS. He looks like a massive unit for the Storm this year. Would have been perfect in the Canes and ironically played in the same 1st 15 as midget.

It's gotta be embarrassing when there's quite a few props out there who are taller than you.

  • @MN5 It's embarrassing enough that these coaches actually think he is a Super level lock. I feel like the media don't ask the hard questions enough. Can't believe no one has even pulled Plumtree up on this...

Like why Isiah Walker-Leaware keeps getting overlooked for players they bring in from outside the original squad. Has he done something to upset someone somewhere along the line?

  • @Higgins maybe they are easing him into Super Rugby? As he has only featured on the bench all season. Bullshit really considering we don't really have the luxury to do so.

Also weird considering Leu'eupepe is hardly experienced. It's the hard-on for the midget that is most bemusing from some one chasing a giant (mythical) Saffa.

  • @Nepia Leu'pepe and Laumape sound like the Mexican mafia.

It's annoying that Blackwell is 1.90m as he is actually a fairly decent player, just too short. If he was 2.00m then we may be talking about a future All Black, shame that isn't the case. Maybe Ardie should give him some of his height.

TBH I think I disagree with you, and I think I said this earlier, I don't think he really stands out in general play to justify having him as a midget lock. I don't think he tackles hard, hits rucks etc - even if he was 2m he would compare unfavourably to BBBR, Whitelock, Tuipoulotu, Romano, Strange etc, even Parkinson and Hemopo.

At Super level at least, I haven't watched him enough at NPC.

  • @Nepia huh that's quite the opposite of me, there was so much moaning about him preseason I was very surprised at how good he's actually been. Once you get tarred with a brush though...

Anyway now Shields is gone they are probably just trying to shoehorn in a Petone player somewhere.

  • @Bones Maybe my expectations are too high - if you’re that short and selected I expect you to be the second coming of BBBT.

    Sure, but you're never-happy-Nepia.
