It is not pride round. NRL does not (yet) have a pride round and it certainly appears that if the NRL are thinking about having one, they really need to think any approach on that through after this clusterfuck
it is not a "pride" jersey, and in any Manly press release the word "pride" was never used
It's an "everyone in league" jersey. To make it they added a couple of tiny rainbow stripes.
It became a gay rights issue because there is no other reason for the 7 players to exclude themselves from wearing it.
here's the official release on the club's website
If it has rainbows on it, its' a pride jersey. Doesn't matter if they use the word or not.
On the whole, it's a sad situation and Roberts points about it are correct and well thought out.
But either you allow players with cultural beliefs out of synch with this on your roster, or you don't. What you don't do is allow them on the roster, then do this. That's not fair on anybody.

That's pathetic. Why are some Christians so desperate to be the victims? Reminds me a lot of incel mentality.
I watched it all, only clicked a couple of minutes in where he was going with it. What a load of BS. Yeah, actually plenty of people have heard of Haneen Zreika and Fawad Ahmed and SBW. The reason they were given a much easier ride by the press than Court and Folau is bugger all to do with which flavour God they prefer. Probably more to do with the fact that they carried themselves with a bit of dignity, raised their concerns with their employers and quietly worked out a solution.
Compare and contrast with Folau and Court, who have gone out of their way to use their media profiles to repeatedly air their shitty homophobic and transphobic views. Folau in particular is a wannabe martyr - or maybe he was being used by people like the ACL, who love the Xtian victim mentality. Bollocks to them, they deserve all the bad press they get.
These 7 Manly lads, as far as I know, have also kept themselves to themselves. They don't seem to be trying to make a point, just to deal with the conflict they have exactly like Zreika. Unfortunately Manley fucked up and denied them the chance to do what she did and make the decision in a controlled way.
Have they been heavily criticised in the media? I've only seen some fairly mild & proportionate criticism. Lumping them in with Folau and Court just because they're Christian is unfair to them.

Maybe 5-10 years ago plus I would have thought these guys complete gronks not going out in that jersey, but these days the pride rainbow seems to be a whole lot more than equal rights to gay people. Now its recognising 30+ genders, being ok with cross dressing adult entertainers educating your children, biological men keeping woman out of top level sport, gender changing hormones for kids and anyone being against any of that demonised and cancelled by big corporates amongst almost every institution there is. It used to be brave to support gay rights, now its brave to merely mention that maybe things have gone too far.
Maybe just keep political bs out of sports so we can go back to just enjoying it for what it is.
And I would add that in these days it is very difficult to distinguish whether <insert corporate or sports entity here> are supporting LGBTQ or are making a virtue signalling political gesture.

Yeah

Nah. You don't screen your players when you sign them to check they have views 100% aligned with the clubs (any of which can change anyway). Maybe if they were making homophic comments in the media, but it's not right to grill them on their personal beliefs that they want to keep to themselves.
And the answer isn't to avoid doing anything like pride round out of fear of upsetting your players, there are dozens of things that someone might object to - pride, anti-racism protests, alcohol, gambling, banking, fossil fuels, the Aussie flag / anthem, ANZAC day poppies, certain countries... can't predict them all, just have to try to deal with them as they arise in a decent way. Seems to me that sitting out one match is a reasonable outcome, even though the way Manly handled it was a shambles.

I don't know, some folks round here seem to be particularly adept at immediately identifying virtue signaling without any uncertainty

Of course you can't - times change and views change with it. The point is that you can't force these things on anybody, despite what is the given correct belief.

Agree that sitting out the match is a fair result, but I'll point out that nobody said these things shouldn't be done. They just shouldn't be done like this. You speak to the players in private (they are the face of the club) and if you have potential issues you either figure out how you are going to handle it, or re-evaluate your support strategy.

Its not clear to me why those who don’t want to wear the rainbow ring jersey cant just wear one with white rings.
The league has rules saying shirts must be identical. Might have been possible to get special dispensation from the NRL for a minor variation. But that would have required a level of organisation that's clearly well beyond Manly's capability
