Thoughts on this? The point that politicians in all parties are venal short sighted and self serving is hard to argue against

General gist is spot on. Missed in a few spots, but no rant should hit every target.

Aucklanders
The haze was so bad that a "high number" of worried Aucklanders had rung 111 to alert police. Police issued a statement asking people to keep the line clear for emergencies only

Are these people 13 years old? How stupid must one be to need to be told to stay off the line unless they have an emergency? What did they expect the emergency services people to do for them?
They would fit in nicely with the renowned Aussie good humour, resilience, resourcefulness, independence and appreciation for a helping hand in the face of adversity:
Scott Morrison's actions 'not lost' on bushfire effected community: Eden resident
Sky News 05/01/20Greta Stojanovic – the owner of the Wharfside Café in Eden – has told Sky News many residents of the border town have been left frustrated by the lack of information and resources on the ground as an out of control bushfire bores down on the town.
Residents had been told to evacuate by road to nearby coastal towns of Merimbula or Pambula, but Ms Stojanovic said many chose to stay after being informed resources would not be allocated to save the town.
“There should also be fire trucks available to fight fire here. I don’t really understand why we can’t be fighting it when it's an imminent threat to our town,” the café owner said.
“We were just told the resources for fighting the fires were just going to be around where evacuation zones are … so we’re not going to rely on somebody to come rescue us when it happens.
“Obviously I’ve seen the maps of the whole country so obviously it's going to places that need it but we do feel … the level of resources is low.”
When asked, Ms Stojanovic told Sky News the sentiment on the ground towards Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the government was “very negative”.
“People are horrified everywhere with how Scott Morrison has approached this … it’s not lost on the community,” Ms Stojanovic said.
Right alongside Our Greta's personal humanitarian crisis we see this brief report:
Jakarta flood death toll rises to 60
Sky News 05/01/20At least 60 people have died in Indonesia's capital of Jakarta due to landslides and flooding. Monsoonal rain on New Year's Eve submerged a dozen districts in the greater Jakarta area.
Rescuers have struggled to search for people under mud in the area's worst flooding since 2007. Floodwaters have started to recede in some parts, however the death toll is likely to rise.

I'd be interested to see informed info about the role of back burning ( called cold burning by some as it occurs usually in June) in facilitating the fuel loads near housing and in the bush.
Talking to some farmers in western Victoria who swear by the practice as one pragmatic solution to the ever present bushfire threat.
My narrative favours that a reduce in cold burning for "looks good" environmental causes has contributed more to this disaster than any carbon trading dispute ever will.
But I'd like to know more and test my narrative.
Apparently the aborigines used to practice cold burning to minimize the risk. Someone more knowledgeable than me said that the authorities don't favour the practice. That leaves more dead wood as fuel and how they are paying the price
They did nothing of the sort. Some tribes used fire to flush out prey. This myth of them managing the environment has as much validity as secret women's business.
Yes indeed.
This from a bloke who has spent most of his life working in Central Australia. It confirms what I heard from another bloke with similar experience - my father, who told us plenty about life in the mulga when I was a boy, including this sort of thing. It was recounted in a matter of fact manner because back then there was no political war being waged over the issue.
**Where on earth did this ridiculous idea come from? That Aboriginals practised some kind of “management” of the bush through fire? Even skeptics accept it as some kind of “historical fact”.
It’s complete and utter crap.Aboriginal is hungry. Aboriginal sets fire to bush and stands upwind. Fire burns and kills stuff. Aboriginal follows and collects dead stuff caught in fire. Aboriginal sits down in shade and eats collected dead, partially cooked stuff. Contented Aboriginal with full belly now has doze. Dozing aboriginal now couldn’t give a stuff if fire burns for five hours over a few acres, or five weeks over 5,000 acres. That’s tomorrow’s tucker.**

Wait right there - I keep a hundred in my wallet for critical emergencies. I'm typing this on my [pedal radio] (https://www.nla.gov.au/blogs/behind-the-scenes/2016/10/24/discovering-the-pedal-radio)using one hand and driving with the other, straight to the Post Office. I will have them send, immediately, a telegraphic transfer on their roneo machine¹. I will not be stopping at the bank to change my $100 note!

Done a bit of mancaping since I took that one, check your inbox for a more recent pic .
What’s the easiest way to donate to the volunteer firefighters?
-
@jegga 24 deliberate. That is crazy high considering the amount caught is possibly a minority of those doing the crime. Maybe this points to a larger issue in Australia, similar to the US and its mass shooting situation. Mental illness, addiction, falling out of society. Would be interesting to see if there is a trend on deliberate fires though again it would be very difficult to pull comparable stats with focus this year due to the resulting huge fires.
If this were London you'd think matches, lighters and flint would be moving their way to the dangerous weapons list.

For clarity, she wasn't selling nudes, she was asking for evidence that they'd donated to one of the main charities.

@No-Quarter and welcome to my mailing list of hot nudes and saucy insta stories. She'll hook a few no doubt! But good on her!

That's pretty awesome @antipodean .
Can I ask is that part of your job? And if so what is it? And where is the data from?
