And what about the revelations that they ignored MOH advice to allow butcher's and liquor stores to stay open in L4? How is that not making bigger headlines???
The many joys of a late Friday afternoon document dump......

Yeah, but why is it not front and top of the Herald today? I only heard about it on some dudes talkback show this ago (Sean/Shaun someone?). When I went online, I had to dig for 10mins to find a tiny mention of it!

The current narrative is that the government are being over-cautious, so it's hard to see where that fits other than as a footnote.

It's fucking huge news!!! The government got advice from MOH, then WENT BEYOND that advice to deem it unsafe for butcher's and liquor stores to open, costing god knows how many jobs, and transferring 800m of wealth into the hands of the major supermarkets.
Some bloody footnote that is.

@voodoo they werent initially (butchers) although plenty ignored the rules, although one I know (up here) was totally contactless and continued ot operate
Alcohol shops that were in Trust areas where supermarkets couldnt sell alcohol...but people drove for oer an hour to buy spirits there...
I think they ended up relaxing it slightly as it went along though, which to me reflects the fluidity of the issue that needed constant addressing...not excusinghow they got there inthe first place though...

Every butcher and every liquor outlet should have remained open, not just allowed to deliver and regardless of proximity to a supermarket.

@voodoo they also ignored the MOH directive to shut our borders, to everyone...
Am sure there is a number of things they would like a do-over, but hopefully, they (or no Govt.) will get the chance to do things differently

I'd like to see the melt down if they'd implemented that ... there'd be a raft of stories of NZers stuck in other countries.
I'm sure every country would like a do-over, some for more things than others.

Ahh, c'mon, you know that's different! MOH is always going to side on the path of total medical caution, and the Gov needs to weigh that against everything else - the economy, mental health, whatever else.
In this case the Gov took that cautious advice AND WENT FURTHER. That's truly amazing to me.

Yeah I'm happy to give them a pass for all the decisions made in the early lockdown period, sort of fog of war. I will be less happy if they fudge on upcoming decisions in the face of 6 weeks of evidence

The government has taken health advice from a range of qualified sources, not just the MoH. It's not a big surprise (to me at least) that some of that advice has been conflicting, and that the government will necessarily have to choose between different recommendations.

yes, moving to L2 from Thursday!!

@Kirwan said in Coronavirus - New Zealand:
It says due to public buy-in the Government doesn't have to explain its response. "There's no real need to defend. Because the public have confidence in what has been achieved and what the Govt [sic] is doing. Instead we can dismiss."
That's a dangerous precedent for a government to consider it doesn't have to explain itself. Particularly where it has enforced house arrest of people who have committed no crime, shut down businesses needlessly and sent thousands of people on the unemployment scrapheap.
More amazing are the apologists.

make people scared enough, and they will let you do anything if you promise to protect them
