I'm thinking they have looked at this new mutation and shat themselves. The rise in infections is huge. Hope I'm wrong, but wouldn't be surprised to see a really big uptick in deaths
-
Intensive care beds in London already nearing capacity apparently
-
@Victor-Meldrew yeah the graphs were pretty telling showing the rise eh. Geezuz imagine they discover the strain reacts differently to the vaccine...

My doctor mate who specialises in infectious diseases says that's very unlikely, as it's not a significant structural change to the spike protein (apparently...)

I was talking to a friend who is an emergency doctor. The surge is bigger than the first wave, mainly because of worse compliance each successive time around

I know MiketheSnow will hate me for saying this, but I think Drayford was right to blame the public for causing the need for lockdowns. It takes only 10% non-compliance to get the R rate rising IIRC.

Yeah they were pretty convincing saying there was most likely no change to anything else. Interesting that 23 points of change was mentioned as being unusual though.

If it's only 10% then we should either have stayed in or stayed out.
Because 10% is a very small number to affect so many.

This. It is the constant flip-flopping trying to appease the economic argument and the the health argument. The coach is losing the dressing room on this one big time.

@MiketheSnow mate I've got a sad enough life that I had an hour to watch the vid below. It's all about the 2020 data for all mortalities at time of occurrence in England.
The science people on this present the data and find interesting questions, anyway, if not conclusions.
In summary they reiterate that the WHO are against lockdowns and that their stats for deaths ( not cases, as it's deaths we're trying to stave off in the last 9 months) did not respond to lockdowns. Dropped with the extra mobility ( population phone data) coming out of lockdown. Shows definite evidence of community immunity being prevalent. Shows the rise in non covid related deaths. Shows a quirk where deaths rose 2 weeks after mask orders. Shows a correlation of covid19 acting in seasonal patterns, ( just like all corona viruses), completely outside of and independent to these enforced social remedies. They think the virus doesn't give a fuck about lockdowns. Cite 22 studies that conclude the same, versus 2 that slightly support lockdown (one of which from that Neil Ferguson guy - the the great historian). A comprehensive presentation of data and their hypotheses. So, what to do about this info and data?
I don't know except at least demand these questions and observations are explained away by the people ordering lockdowns. There has to be more strategies than locking up for a disease that spares 99% and where the majority are asymptomatic.
9 months living under constant fear and irritation of lockdown can't be the only possible strategy?
All the best over there mate - even if these scientists and the Barrington one's whacky bullshit use of empirical data sourced from excellent public health records proves to be true, (even mostly true), there ain't no way any government is going to walk back this last 6 months of policy. I'll see you at the great reset party 😉
Good luck though brit ferners. Winter is upon you

Royally royally fucked. It's completely over.
Media alright got knives out / blaming Boris.
Bullshit. Time the residents of this country owned the fucking problem.
Straight from the Ministry of the Bleeding Obvious, but if stupid fucks stuck to the rules we’d be in a much better place. I just came back from B&Q. 6 separate groups of people in the store not wearing masks. In the last lockdown, big groups of people having full on football matches in the park every weekend, when I was out running. Coincidently in both cases, all the same ethnic group who complain that they are disproportionately affected by COVID because of poverty and the state not doing enough to help them. Just fuck off and take some responsibility you *****

In Tier 4 and expect to be there for some time. Lost count of how many local people I know in North London and SW Herts who have had the Coronavirus now. Most seem okay after a week or two, but some are still tired and have a lingering cough months later, a few acquaintances who had underlying health problems have passed away.
Worst bit about the today is that Johnson and co. knew about the more infectious mutation months ago and don't seem to have told anyone or done much about it.

I think it was Whitty or Vallance said SAGE had only found out it was far more infectious a few days ago after data from screening tests.. You get the impression they were seriously spooked by the rise in infections caused by the new variant and a big increase in hospital admissions.

If Drakeford had stated from the start that
the Welsh Government run, Central Government funded Welsh NHS has done a tremendous job preserving the lives of people who only a generation ago would have passed away.
Unfortunately there are so many people in Wales on long term care, medical services, and medicines the Welsh NHS was close to breaking point before COVID-19 was even a factor.
Once COVID-19 took hold it was obvious that there was going to be a battle to continue to provide care to a sick nation and care for the newly COVID-19 sick.
The lockdowns and firebreaks have been issued in an attempt to slow the rate of people entering hospital so we can care for those admitted and discharge them before the next person contracts it.
This has proved of limited success as the rate of infection is faster than recovery.
People have died and will die.
That is not the fault of the general public or the medical services.
COVID-19 attacks us all and can be fatal to those already sick, or the elder members of our community who may have impaired immune systems.
So if you’re in this category(ies) stay home
If you live with someone who is sick or in these categories take every precaution to limit the potential for spread.
Otherwise let’s go about our daily lives making sure we limit the spread of the virus.
That would have placed us in at least the same position we find ourselves now and possibly better.
Either way the economy wouldn’t have been fucked.

Making such a dramatic decision with less than 24hrs notice is endemic of a Government that doesn't know what to do.
This is PANIC mode.

I actually disagree.
If they gave more notice at this time, the shops would all be swamped. It had to be done this way, had to be.
-
@MajorRage Yeah, as much as it sucks to be caught up in it it has to be the right way. To be honest I could never understand the sense in giving a weeks notice that there will be a lockdown. It just encourages the end of the world party in the interim.
Whether the lockdown itself is required is another argument.

Well it's fucked up my Christmas and that of our family something awful. Mrs M's sister won't be seeing her kids at Christmas for the first time ever - all this with a terminal illness in the family. Don't think we are unique in the Fucked Up Christmas category either.
But I can understand why they acted as they did. The BBC Health correspondent said the data on the new strain and its spread only became available on Friday night and that's why they acted so quickly.
