Saw that and meant to post it. Shit he was incredible and often outshone Jonah in games when they played together. If he got selected in 96 Tana Umaga may never have got a game. With all the ex players making big money as coaches/commentators etc it seems pretty sad he has the job he does. Not to mention the ongoing health issues he’ll always have.

Good read. Thanks for posting. Spiers, Dalton, Ketel would still be my front row in an all-time Counties team.

                  400+ club games is phenomenal.

I knew John quite well growing up through playing rugby with his son and his wool business buying from my Dad. He took great delight in hearing I was playing for Pukekohe when I played Under 17's there. My schools only All Black also.

This can't be a playing days picture can it? They all look middle aged. Did everyone resemble the Whitelocks in the 70s?

I have always thought this. Ever since I was a kid when I saw photos of old blokes taken when they were young I thought they looked old in them. Probably because they still had the same hair cut, same style of clothes etc. I am guessing if I wasn't bald I'd still have the same hair cut now. I probably wear the same clothes.

People didn’t really shave their heads in those days either, they just had bald patches.

But then again Joe Roff was only a year or two older than me and I thought he looked about 40 when he debuted.

Is Ketels standing on a box? If you believe official stats Spiers is the taller of the two.

                                  Spiers always looked about 50.

I played against him in a pre season game once. Early 90s and he was still playing Reserves.

He played lock (I was somewhere in the looses).

Massive bloke and real "old man strength".

Didn't know who he was until after the game and the Puke boys mentioned who 'Spiro' was. They were in a bit of awe of him (rightly). Said something like he's the nicest guy but could break you in half if he wanted.
