Win or lose, the Dems have much work to do to convince people that they aren't going to turn the US into a socialist republic
Yeah with social welfare protection and universal healthcare. Communists.
Rich and poor GOP voters find these concepts abhorrent. The poor ones would benefit the most

Something else for anyone interested in conspiracy theories - which I pointed out before...
The counts are still going on in most of the states that were long ago called.
According to the NYT map...
In Mississippi, they've still only counted 78% of the votes. Ohio 90%. Iowa 92%. North Dakota 91%. Oklahoma 96%.
And on the Democrat side - New York 84%, California 77%.
California got called before counting even started. AP call based on stacks of analytics which draw on previous elections and exit polling, sometimes at 0, sometimes not until the majority is bigger than the remaining votes left to count.

Aspiration is a bitch. That quote "Socialism in the US never took hold, because the poor see themselves as temporarily embarrassed millionaires" or somesuch

That and a lot of defectors who are rather leery of any hint of socialism, like ex-Cubans for example.

I watched something about that on TV last night. Thats why Florida loves Trump

Biden within 500 votes of Trump in Georgia. I'm really surprised about this result - if it holds, it could be the start of the dems taking over in south?
In PA and Arizona it just seems a matter of time for Biden too, so he should have a reasonable gap if he also gets Nevada. That would be a lot of court challenges.
-
@gt12 at this point, rightly or wrongly, those legal challenges are needed imo. With things so close and the rhetoric so spicy anything that adds some official clarity is needed. Not that a bunch of folk will believe it, but hey.
Does each state have its own threshold to trigger a recount? Or is it more country-wide? As in what % margin means it has to be checked again.
-
In addition to any legal challenges from candidates i mean.

Maybe the black lives publicity (not necessarily the movement) spurred urban blacks to the polls

Like all good political tragics, I'm watching CNN on a Friday night... They've just had some commentary on which says that the urban-rural divide is the sharpest in living memory, and that where in the past, even in cities, rich counties would typically vote for Republicans, now you can basically draw a boundary around urban areas and that's the split. As the larger Southern states become more urbanised, the Dems start to nudge them. That said, Biden's campaign has apparently pared back the rural losses a lot more than Hillary or even Obama.
Also, the lead in Georgia has just gone to Biden and Pennsylvania and Georgia votes are coming in from large urban counties at a 80+% in Biden's favour.

Why do you immediately jump to the conclusion that 'something funny is going on'?
Record turnouts, unprecented mail ballot numbers (due to some fake pandemic thing) and high numbers of voters registering on the day will mean that in some places votes will take longer to count and verify.
Irony is that some of the delay is due to on the day registrations and those votes are being held back to check legitimacy of voters (ID checks etc). That is good practice, not 'something funny'.These claims are getting to be highly embarrassing and amount to fishing expeditions.
@Crucial said in US Politics:
PA has tightened to 100k difference. The state count is 98% but the bluest county (Philly) is only at 86% counted and is recording 80% of votes in favour of Biden.
Biden could fall about 10 - 15k short by rough calcsYou posted this post directly after the one above it, and criticise the notion that something funny is going on?
Trump lead by almost 700,000 votes. There is around 7mill votes in this state, that means he was ahead by 10% of the entire count. This is a colossal turn around, and absolutely reeks of something funny going on.
-
@MajorRage But if they counted the postal votes first, the reverse would be true: Biden would have a lead of 7-800k and then Trump would work that down. It's what happened in Florida (on a slightly smaller scale) but nobody is questioning that...

Or exactly what a lot of experts were predicting i.e. blue votes coming in via mail not being counted until Days 2 or 3
