Have very little sympathy for Paine. Tries to project an aura of nicey goodie two shoes, but is apparently a dick.

At least Wade doesn't try to hide it.

Interesting that the two blokes with the sledging and dickness yesterday were their least accomplished and most vulnerable to non-selection.

Yep, trash talking loses alot of impact if you're a shit player.

A well written article about Paine and the sledging.

Is there any way they would make Smith Captain again? I would. He is obviously the team leader

Paine: I can't wait to see you at the GABBA.

Ashwin: I can't wait to see you in India, it will be your last series.

That's a quality comeback from Ashwin.

Followed by "are you a selector here now?"

Ashwin should have come back with "well I would certainly select you".

    Maybe too subtle for Paine?

Short memories around the place, Tim Paine was MoTM just two tests ago! Has the second highest batting average of any Aussie keeper (behind Gilchrist), and despite a tough few hours is still as good a gloveman as we have.

Banter was a bit much late, but they were pushing to win a crucial test, been in the field all day, and it was more annoying than offensive. Happy to give him the benefit of the doubt given his track record so far.

    So fair! All of this!

I like to judge test to test though 🙂 Steve Smith was very lucky to keep his place after this first test...…… 🙂

Actually Paine's average has dipped below Brad Haddin's now.

In all seriousness, if we had another keeper scoring bulk runs in the Shield then it would be a different conversation I think.

Alex Carey would be viewed as the next in line but his FC average is 34 - handy but not outstanding. Paine's test average is 32.

Only one here that I think was suggesting Paine wasn't up to it.

Other comments were more that he should STFU.

No hundreds and the modern game demands a keeper with an average of close to 40 these days.

Well, ok we’re pretty spoilt with BJ to be fair, whoever succeeds him has massive shoes to fill.

But fuck Tim Paine, not remotely in that class.

He was Jonny on the spot after the Smith/Warner fiasco, for now they seem happy to keep him there

Yep I definitely get that but he’s a placeholder by Aussie cricket standards. This team has some fantastic players but, comforting for the rest of the world, they have some journeymen too.

I would like to see us tested against them again. We never really recovered after agreeing to a poor buildup and then getting crushed in Perth. But I can't help thinking they grow in confidence when they play us, and we do the opposite

No, but once again it's not like we've got keepers averaging 40 floating around. The cupboard is bare.

I'm a big Paine fan. What he's done with this team since Sandpapergate is truly remarkable, in terms of reputation and on-field performance. He was never going to be an all-time player, but he was the man for his time.

He is at the bottom of the pantheon of Australian skippers, but from where he was just a few years ago the fact that he is actually in that pantheon is an enormous achievement.

Definitely but I’d love the boys to have another chance. A fired up Jamieson ( no emotional baggage )having a go at them is hugely exciting....then again he only does well at home according to the Bobs and Vagene crowd.

Yeah fair point, my post probably did come across as petty considering we have the much better player in BJ but after he goes there’s no guarantee we’ll get someone remotely close in class.

It's funny, I'd pick BJ over Paine in a combined 11, but if you threw BJ into this Australian team in Paine's place I would guess they actually perform worse as a team.

Paine is a real lynch pin, and I really doubt the leadership capabilities of the other 10 blokes in the team.
