Born in Sept, see. Only one in the current squad!

Per Month: Jan~Mar 5-5-6 Rest of the Year 3-4-2-2-0-1-3-4-3

How your date of birth could affect your chances of playing for the All Blacks

How your date of birth could affect your chances of playing for the All Blacks

Your date of birth, as it happens, could have a rather significant bearing on whether or not you play for the All Blacks.

So, expectant AB parents, aim for (and aim during) April-May-June..I wonder if this indicates breeding time preferences for rugby fans?

Nah, I'm right in the middle of that period and they never even gave me a chance.

Sept babies were conceived after a drunken fumble on New Years eve. Weak sperm.

                      None in August.

But, if their theory is correct, how come there's a comeback in October/Nov/Dec.

I've got a different theory that the season you are born in somewhat impacts on your life. Born in the summer you're outside in the sun. Born in the winter, you're inside huddled up against the cold.

                      Only 5 ABs in June-July-August-September.

Do you think kids that are not put ahead at school have an advantage? A kid who leaves school at 17 after year 13 must have a disadvantage. My son will be going to High School next year, born in May he will be starting as a 12 year old. If he plays rugby next year he will have to play Under 14 open weight. He will be able to play that grade two years in a row. But the first year will be tough. This is one area where the transition from junior rugby to High school rugby could be looked at. He can't play Under 13 at club level because year 9's aren't allowed. I'm in Hamilton and he's not going to HBHS so there is only one team for him to go in at Fraser.

Edit: I wrote this post before I read the article, because it's the Fern and I'm a big idiot.

Malcolm Gladwell did a chapter on this in Outliers. Studied Canadian hockey, and the dominance of players born in the first four months of the year.

Their early birthdays meant they were more developed than their age group peers in under 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s, and thus were more likely to be better at hockey and make representative squads. In these squads they received better coaching, and thus got even better again. By the time the younger kids caught up physically they had received years of better coaching and opportunities.

I refuse to wear adidas boots thus am unfairly discriminated against. Hopefully the Mizuno Boot Wearer Lives Matter Movement will organise a suitable take the knee protest.

those born early in the year would typically play in a grade where kids are younger, some upto a year younger...so potentially will be slightly older bigger, smarter.

That said, I'd say totally coincidental...they should do the same over the history of the ABs to see if there is a real pattern.

The stats will be a little bit out of date now, but according to a book I have (based on the period from 1883-2003), January and July were the most popular months for an AB birthday over that 120-year period. June was the least common month of birth. A side note, Meads and Fitzpatrick were both born in June.

                                            Would need careful research.

When I played at school the cut off date was 31 March.

A mate of mine has the same birthday as Jonah, albeit 2 years younger than the great man.

He is not big, Tongan, fast, evasive, powerful or freakish so all of this is utter bullshit.

Nice. I was a bit the opposite - still shit at rugby but had "some" athletic ability. Lacked the aggression. If I was as angry in my teens as I am now...who knows what might have happened. I was even born at the right time.

Actually Outliers is quite interesting but I wouldn't read too much into it.

I was just a bit shit at rugby, all heart but zero talent.

Nice. I was a bit the opposite - still shit at rugby but had "some" athletic ability. Lacked the aggression. If I was as angry in my teens as I am now...who knows what might have happened. I was even born at the right time.

Actually Outliers is quite interesting but I wouldn't read too much into it.

There should be a version of rugby for grumpy old men.
