I worked with an ex military guy who was furious his Swiss Army knife got confiscated many years back. He pointed out the above fact to cabin crew and for some reason they took offence to it.
I had nail scissors taken off me after 9/11. I pointed out that if I wanted to kill everybody I was sitting in the left front seat and really didn't need the scissors, I knew how to do it without a manicure.
I didn't want a cavity search so I handed over the scissors.

I remember having to mail home a 1.5 in Swiss army knife when I realised it was on my keys going through back check. Funny times

@crucial said in New Lynn knife attack:
I just don't see why you would have a problem with that.
because it's grandstanding based on a statistical anomaly

It hasn't changed.

I guess so.
The ability of people to be fucking idiots astounds me with these things.
Thinking about my store - I could have a massacre in there. Paint scrapers, stanley knives, box cutters, endless weapons, but I can't get a paring knife from the supermarket.
It's actually comical.

I usually make sure I'm not carrying on international. But I'm sure I've been let through on domestic

Shouldn't have, even on domestic. Must have just got away with it.
Depends on country and Airline too, but not NZ.
LAGs are bit easier but not sharp objects.

I've never been hit by a drunk driver either and as we know from random checks there are a few out there. Can't see why we need to put any rules around reducing risk.
Even if it was grandstanding what's the outcome? Fuck all to you but maybe a few worried shop workers might feel a little safer.
You're just shouting at clouds. -
@crucial and your simping to your messiah. and begging for more regulation in your life.
your analogy is fucking stupid as well. You aren't allowed to drink and drive because you might kill someone. You aren't allowed to stab someone with a knife, because you might kill someone
You are however, allowed to buy and operate a car. You are also able to buy and use a knife.

It has zero effect on my life. That's the point.

it has zero effect on anyone's life, except someone somewhere has now been seen to be "doing something"
THAT'S that point

and that's worth you getting upset about?
-
@mariner4life said in New Lynn knife attack:
@crucial see, that's what you're missing
I'm not upset. i just think it's stupid. and pointless. and grandstanding. and not something to be applauded.
So all those countries that went there (and further) before NZ also just decided to make up stupid, pointless, grandstanding laws as well? OK, you know better.
Let's get those guns back at the corner store while we are at it shall we?

You almost sound right wing.
I thought leftists cared about all of society??Tell me whose lives it has a negative effect on.
@mariner4life no one is stopping knife sales they are just taking them off the shelves. Once they get sorted the result is usually cabinets and or cardboard placeholders that you take to the till. Happens in lots of places.
-
what places? King of Knives put their expensive ones away, but cheap knife blocks are on display there, KMart, Target, and you can buy cheap ones on the shelf in Coles too.

Anyone who is at the supermarket and needs to buy a knife.
I bought a knife for cooking from the supermarket when I was at uni. Another time was while getting food for an unplanned picnic. Both of those scenarios would have been negatively impacted by this. Probably also have got a pair of scissors (which I think they also removed from sale) from there before as well.
