@jc Oh the flashy new girl may have you turned on for a while with all of her comforts, but the boy racer in you will be back soon enough that wants to play with a fast woman even if she damages you a bit.

. And heated and cooled cupholders. Where have they been all my life?

That's really awesome. I didn't know new cars also had that.

I have never used seat warmers before despite having them in the past few cars as I don't need my bum warmed. What I didn't know is that it also heats the lower to mid back! I wish I knew that as I would have used it many times.

@snowy speed limits are up the crapper. Some are too high, a helluva lot are too low.

Why do we have 110 Hamilton - Cambridge but not other parts of Waikato Expressway or Albany -Puhoi.

They're talking about making Taupo - Napier 80 kph. I get there are a fair number of fatalities on that road and many of them are speed related but I'm betting where speed is involved there are other factors as well. Plus I reckon they'll be well over the current limit and won't be the type of driver who drops from 130 to 110 because the new limit has gone down 20 kph.

Is any other country as strict as NZ on speed limits & advertising / enforcement of them?

Victoria. Victorian motorists are regularly ticketed for exceeding the limit by as little as 2km/h

    Man that's disappointing to hear.

I got a ticket for 108 two days ago and I was fine with that. I know the rules and that is far enough over to warrant a ticket. Had a good yarn to the officer too. $30 and 10 demerits

Really good if you have a sore back. Like using deep heat, or what ever that shit was that they used to use at rugby. Liniment - that was it. Stank, but worked.

I thought that was O.K? Unless holiday times when 104? I often set cruise control to 106 (GPS speed, car speedos usually overread by 5 ish KPH).

Yeah, I thought 108 wasn't too bad either. Certainly couldn't complain about getting a ticket. My speedo was prolly on 110-112

@snowy Police advised that they'd done away with the 10kph tolerance about a year ago.

    LOl.

Didn't really want to go jumping poles (so to speak) just a means of going out without getting a speeding fine.

That is crazy. Doesn't it negatively impact the relationship the public have with the police and fuel suspicion it's all about raising money and not road safety?

In the UK it's 10% plus 2mph (e.g you can do 35 before being nicked), there has to be warning signs that cameras are in operation and all camera/cars must be conspicuously marked/bright yellow. A few years back a Chief Constable had to resign when his force was found to be using warning signs that were too small and all the fines were refunded.

And yet road accident rates in the UK are really low despite the relatively high speed limits we have.

I do find all these rules fairly odd - I just can't compute why the police should have to meet all these strict points just to nick you for going over the speed limit.

@victor-meldrew you sure about car's? I've seen plenty of undercover cars with lights flashing pulled over at the side of the road having pulled people over.

Everyone knows it's about revenue. Victorians are just a special species prepared to put up with it. Other jurisdictions in Australia have more nuanced views on enforcement, some more nuanced than others.

I've actually had a HWP car sitting between the dual lane divided highway turn on its lights and turn them off again when I slowed down to the speed limit. This on a designated dual penalty (double fine, double demerit points) in an area well known for enforcement. I.e. the stretch of highway servicing the NSW police academy.

Here in the ACT they've got more important things to worry about. You have to be seriously trying to get caught (and people do).

    Talking about speed cameras/traps.

Undercover cars are fine by me as they catch the loons who drive dangerously and not just speed.

I think it's to avoid any suspicion that it's about raising money and all about road safety. If you get caught speeding here, you can generally go on a road-safety course and avoid the fine and (I think) the points on your licence.

Just as Drink Driving became socially unacceptable decades ago, speeding is moving the same way.

My first experience with a UK traffic cop was a officer on a police bike pulling me over for speeding on my new BMW R100S and advising me to slow down as the stock Metzler tyres were shit in the rain.

The Police have designated high visibility taskings where they are tasked to do exactly as you describe. That is to be purely visible and not actively engage unless there was a high risk to someone's safety.
