    @Bovidae Exactly!!!

I'd be tempted to make TJ the captain of the Maori and reassure him he's not out of the picture. Pick Weber and Christie and give Fakatava an apprenticeship.

Fakatava has to be played as early as possible. (as reserve to Smith)
Fuck some people on here are too conservative.

His distribution is a work on.

Like all of it though? What's he lacking in that area? A stat often thrown out about him is him having the last pass before a try is scored, so he must be distributing pretty damn well in some capacity? Or he's hungus but lazy 😁

    No power-wing, no thanks.

I’d still prefer Ioane on the wing but it looks as if centre is his gig.

Why on earth would you want the best centre in New Zealand to play on the wing?

His impact on the wing at test level speaks for itself.

Tana was a pretty good winger too. What a ridiculous argument. Players evolve and he's clearly the best centre in New Zealand. By an order of magnitude.

Instead let's select obviously inferior players and then complain Rieko's at fault for not looking for work because the donkeys inside him can't get him the ball often enough.

Feel free to call me a moron, and I'm perfectly happy to have him at centre (and I've never complained when the ball hasn't gone his way like in some test matches, in fact I think I've highlight when they haven't fed the ball to him), I just think with a fit (and obviously in form) ALB at centre feeding him the ball in space out wide that he's a bloody weapon there as well.

I see that as a different argument. That if there were a compelling alternative such as a fit and in form ALB, he could play centre and Rieko on the wing, but the issue is Rieko at centre and the best form left winger is better than the alternative.

Christ - you're going to draw me into "Ioane Wars". πŸ™‚

In a way, all of it is a work on. I don't think he's a world class distributor - probably runs too far too often. Not the most accurate passer.

For those backing ALB, I think this is where his edge lies.

Not having a go! I just don't see what you see in that regard. Both his short and long passing game seem pretty accurate to me, so yeah just wondering what I'm not seeing.

I'm not sold that in 2022 Rieko is a better winger than centre.

Rieko's not the best under the high ball (he's decent at it but he's had some issues too) and he's getting better and better at centre.

    @Bones No worries.

I'm just conscious that whatever you say about the Ioanes on this board - or their competitors - likely gets blown out of all proportion. πŸ™‚

I still hate the Ioanes because I once commented that Akira seemed a bit slow chasing in defence and pondered if he was carrying an injury.

No idea what you're talking about.

Nah, it's that you are pushing the case for a guy who has had a ton of chances (four fuckin years in the ABs) at test level and has been 100% reliable in failing to deliver.

Yeah, I only suggest players who have gone well this year, are worth looking at. Guess if we follow your advice we will pick players on past performances, and not if they still on form.
But as I sadi we all have different ways at looking at it, so no probs.

Foster said he and Reiko had a disagreement, Foster reckoned Reiko was a wing who could play centre, and Reiko reckoned he was a centre that could play centre. Foster says he now thinks maybe Reiko was right.

Can't believe people are pumping for a guy who can't even do his post try ball punch properly, is that even the kind of guy we want?

If you are gonna score a try, either walk back like it ain't no thing or get your celebration right, an embarrassing airshot like that has no place on a rugby field, NO PLACE I TELLS YA!

Better off not scoring at all if you can't get it right after...sheesh, the embarrassment 🀦

Would be good to see apprentices again this year. For example, Newell and Lord would do well from exposure.

He's kinda graduated from that rung fella....

Watch who you call a tautologist, fella!

Sometimes Rieko seems to be poor at knowing WHEN to pass and when not to.

Contrast with Hoskins (down the edge vs Clan) who thought about the 30:70 ball, but knew better, took contact and we scored two or three phases later.

In a few years time, when we are talking about Rieko as one of our best 13s, I’m planning on re-visiting this conversation.

I can understand the misgivings until this last year, when he has been the best 13 in NZ by a fucking mile.

@KiwiMurph the depends on the role you see for the 23 jersey. If it's purely having a back up if someone goes down, thrn yeah I guess.

But if it's actually for impact late, then no.

If the back 3 is Jordie, Jordan and Reece, I’d give the 23 jersey to someone like Caleb Clarke or a bolter like Fainganuku or RTS.

If all of Beaudie, Mo’unga and Jordie are in the 23 then you don’t need a guy like Havili

Generally agree, but there is a logic in having DH in the 23 for the 1st Test as a safe option. Def. be good to have a bolter or two in the later ones.
