@mariner4life I don't think it's a fait accompli that Ukraine will fall.
What's the end game? The Ukrainians have made it clear they have no interest in being brought into a new Soviet state. Russia can't just keep their whole army there forever. Even the US got tired of baring that cost and their economy is 10 times that of Russia.
Hey boys come and look at my sexy cost.
*bear not bare

War had to be declared, with the proper paperwork! Otherwise it's just a scuffle, I guess

Jesus what a shitshow she is. Does she know she had soldiers deployed while she was head of NZ’s defence forces?

Niall Ferguson has an excellent (IMO) piece in The Spectator
War’, in Prussian military theorist Carl von Clausewitz’s most famous dictum, ‘is nothing but a continuation of politics with the admixture of other means.’ A generation of Democrats — the American variety, but also European Christian and Social Democrats — have sought to ignore that truth. Appalled by the violence of war, they have vainly searched for alternatives to waging it. When Vladimir Putin ordered the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Barack Obama responded with economic sanctions. When Putin intervened in the Syrian civil war, they tried indignant speeches. When it became clear that Putin intended a further and larger military incursion into Ukraine, Joe Biden and his national security team opted for sanctions once again. If Putin invaded Ukraine, they said, Russia would face ‘crippling’ or ‘devastating’ economic and financial penalties. When these threats did not deter Putin, they tried a new tactic, publishing intelligence on the likely timing and nature of the Russian assault. Cheerleaders for the administration thought this brilliant and original. It was, in reality, a species of magical thinking, as if stating publicly when Putin was going to invade would make him less likely to do so. Those who dread war approach diplomacy the wrong way, as if it is an alternative to war. This gives rise to the delusion that, so long as talks are continuing, war is being averted. But unless you are prepared ultimately to resort to force yourself, negotiations are merely a postponement of the other side’s aggression. They will avert war only if you concede peacefully what the aggressor is prepared to take by force.

yeah that's the fucking point right there isn't it?

A couple of interesting comments I've picked up today:
BBC Moscow correspondent says the mood in Moscow is very different and he's picking up on a lot more anti-Putin comments than ever before. Wonders if Putin has gone that one step too far.
Defence Sec Ben Wallace has said the UK was sponsoring Ukraine for NATO membership for 20 years "but some other nations didn't want them to come in"

Will Putin go full-Trudeau on his own people?

Does everyone here know who Barrie Cassidy is, BTW?
No idea. Who is he?
Yeah probably should have given that context.
Former Australian political journo - since the 70s. Worked on a few Federal campaigns (press secretary for Hawke's Labor govt in the 80s) and knows his way around the halls of power.
I'd say he knows more people on the ground in Ukraine right now than a few here - definitely more than me.
Critic of clickbait journalism, too. I thought that would line up nicely with a lot of people on here who decry the MSM
And I didn't take his tweet as saying nothing was happening - clearly Russia is being collectively dickheaded about this and has boots on the ground.. But the media are certainly on the hype train already.
What the hell would Barrie Cassidy know he is 30 years out of Canberra and the gallery?
If you think a former media adviser to the PM has any great insight the Sky News line up must really excite you with a former PM COS, Defence Minister COS and another Hawke media adviser back to back.
Also not an argument I've heard used for Alan Jones... "His comments seem batshit crazy, but he was Malcolm Fraser's speechwriter four decades ago so who am I to argue".

What? Arrest a few hundred blocking roads in trucks? A bit different from invading an entire sovereign nation, because you have changed the presidential rules to mean you can stay in power indefinitely

It was a joke.
