@canefan 95 was nothing like the situation now. We were inconsistent but had beaten the Boks and Lions in the preceding two seasons.

Fozzie's team beat those they should and lose the other games

Yeah my analogy isn't perfect. My recollection was that Laurie only settled on his top lineup just before the tourney, I don't remember us being mentioned as favourites. Right now we look at sea in every department

Some surprise Superstars called Jonah, Oz, JK and Merhts helped too it has to be said.

If you mean Kirwan then I agree his value to the 95 RWC side as a poorly performing utility back for the Auckland Warriors has been long overlooked.

@canefan We definitely weren't favourites - Oz and SA (as hosts) and France were considered the best chances. Then us.

Na the guy who played in the seven jersey after Michael Jones and before Richie McCaw.

Of course if I were selector another capped AB called JK would be that guy who scored the winner for the saders in 98.

    James Kerr

1995 was a really weird year rugby calendar wise for the ABs compared to now.

One test vs Canada in April

Then RWC in May/June (6 tests)

Then 2 test Bledisloe in July

Then 3 test tour of Italy France in October/November (plus 5 non-test tour games).

That's some revisionist history. He was actually a pretty good performing wing for the Warriors, especially for an old man.

@nepia He was clearly signed for the publicity. He did better in 96 but that first year my recollection is he was a bit losyt. Looked it up he had 16 games for 3 tries and is described as a modest performer

That won't be happening this time

Exactly. Every rival coach will have been studying every single minute of RTS and how he has gone at Super Rugby so far.

Hell that won't take long, as he has only played 120 minutes.

Can't really find a better thread to put this in, but Izzy Dagg tells a great story.

Plenty were asking the question after 95 if it was just a PR stunt by the Warriors, because he wasn’t great shakes at all.

    @taniwharugby HE’S GOT DAGG!

Those close test matches (and there were plenty of them back then) didn’t do the heart any great favours.

@ACT-Crusader upvote for Brown at 3.

But Bunce at 12? Wasn't he a centre?

NZ Sporting History: The 1995 RWC Final in South Africa

This week in NZ Sporting history we go back to 1995 when a 36 strong All Black team is in South Africa for the World Cup. It was the first major sporting event in the country since the end of apartheid. Nelson Mandela was president. But things didn't goes as planned for planned for the All Blacks...

Didn't get as far as Suzygate before I reached my destination, but according to Lozza he had a cunning plan all along

Bunce very first test match for the ABs was at 2nd 5, but all of his other ones were at centre.

Good old Laurie thinking Little was a centre. No wonder they lost to the World XV.

@Bones The win % says more than the total number of wins.

He's no Laurie Mains, but everyone's gotta have goals.

John Mitchell done so dirty by that graphic

Foster seems like a guy a little out of his depth, Mitchell has always seemed like a KHunt. So not done dirty at all in my book.

At least Foster's players genuinely seem to be fond of him. Not sure any of Mitch's players would lay on a grenade for him. I dislike the man for clear reason. His only redeeming feature is that he has a son that plays cricket for NZ and does it very well

He gave some pretty clear reasons for why he dropped Cullen but by Christ they went down like a shit sandwich.

I guess that comes down to was a case of was a 80% Cullen as good as 100% MacDonald/Blair ?

……so many on here have had a go at Foster for NOT dropping guys that are that tiny bit past it so it kinda proves you can’t win as an AB coach no matter what you do.

Well Cullen ( and bear in mind I’m talking about a guy who is literally the only choice in an all time XV for me ) had lost some pace after the knee surgeries.

I also found Mitchell somewhat of a weird fellow when interviewed…..but he made a tough call and stuck to it.
