Up in the NH they had ex-ref Nigel Owens as "extra comments / ref insight" in the 6 Nations matches. He was great especially on interpreting the new laws, and he frequently disagreed with the match day ref. Always good for interesting and insightful explanations as to why the match ref had blown up for the penalty and put into context what the ref was looking for.

    Couldn’t disagree more.

Had no respect for the refs not having the replays and turned into a rabid Welsh fan always always taking a view in favour of the Taffs.

    The most disappointing commentator ever.

I quite enjoy Ben Castle's work. Has the prop insight and is a smooth communicator.

That's a critical skill/talent that really adds to the viewing experience IMO. I don't care so much about how much they know or what they did in the 'good ol days' - if they can string sentences together in a clear voice that has the right mix of levelheadedness and emotion of the game.

Ian Jones ticked a few boxes but fell down on the voice. It was just difficult to listen too.

I don't watch much league but I'm always shocked when I hear Halligan attempting to speak

Also I would like to see Sky create a swear jar for the word "outstanding"

I like Jeff Wilson but "outstanding" has been a verbal tick of his that has spread to every other commentator

Yeah, that's my biggest gripe (and another horrible aspect of Marshall). The amount of grief refs get from comms in rugby is awful and a really poor advertisement. It's usually less prevalent in NH comms, but Nige upped the stakes there a bit. Kiwi and OZ comms are terrible for it.

Unfortunately that applies to some of the current "expert" or sideline commentators.

That was my main issue with Sumo as a lead rugby commentator. Wouldn't dare criticise the players for obvious fuck ups as there was a chance he might get on the beers with them later, but he'd happily rip into a refereeing decision given even the slightest chance.

@Smudge yeah can't say I've missed him, Smudgaroony.

    Original sumo was good though.

Marshall will still be over there, somehow. Don’t think I would have selected any differently.

Surprisingly that Mils is the most ‘recent’ member of the team when you consider he finished in 2011. Wonder if any of the current squad have the interest and ability to go into media when they hang them up.

International comps generally don’t reward media ability, only success on the field as far as I can tell from the UK. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Sumo was a breath of fresh air but then he was too much. Commentators are for the background.

I had warmed to Marshall honestly. Shame.

@Bones maybe it's a Kiwi thing...any match thread here seems more posts about ref mistakes than anything else.

I think it's an anywhere thing and I don't give a shit if Joe public does it, but Comms shouldn't to the extent of kiwi/Oz (I think Oz have probably been worse recently, and like Marshall waffle on completely ignoring the laws).

As the only other “foreigners,” Marshall and George Gregan, his friend and former Wallaby rival, have been subsequently invited by SuperSport to join their commentary team in France.

Marshall has approached Sky about the offer, to which they were “really understanding ... and they have given me consent and support to go’'.
