Allister Coetzee has been named as head coach of the Springboks for the next four years, ushering in an exciting new era for rugby in South Africa, said Mr Oregan Hoskins, president of SA Rugby.

The 52-year-old former Springbok assistant coach succeeds Heyneke Meyer at a time when a number of veterans of the 2007 Rugby World Cup triumph have gone into retirement, including three of last year’s four captains.

“Allister’s appointment marks the changing of the guard at the top of Springbok rugby and is an exciting new departure for SA Rugby,” said Mr Hoskins.

He doesn't really scare me. Played mostly forward oriented rugby with the Stormers even though he was largely successful.

Be interesting to see who he appoints as captain. Vermuelen is out because he plays overseas. Will probably be Etzebeth or Whitely.

Interesting observation to make about a coach

Time will tell if he can deal with the politics that often plagues the Springboks

I suspect he wouldn't say that about Johan Ackermann who was also in the running.

Sounds like they've already kinda undermined him by not letting him pick the assistants he wanted?

Good luck to him though.

His Stormers side had some great backs, not that you would have known it from the turgid rugby they played.

Actually, i quite liked them for a while, they were brutal and effective up front, but they always underachieved because they couldn't score enough points.

Be interesting to see how he goes this year given the resources at his disposal

That is a seriously light coaching resume for an assistant coach of one of the powerhouses of world rugby.

I assume that he is a transformation appointment, but even so, he must have some incriminating photos or something ...

Ordinarily I hate it when people cast aspersions on appointments due to race or gender, but in this case it is just hard to fathom there could be any other reason for it.

Not too bothered with Stick's appointment. He must have done an alright job to do what he did with the EP U19 side. He can't go any worse then Ricardo Loubscher, and Allister Coetzee is a backline coach as well so not too stressed.

Can't say I was too happy about Coetzee's appointment either but who knows, maybe he realises it's time we develop. Maybe he realises that we are being left behind and actually need to play some rugby while entertaining crowds.

And while I'm not very enthusiastic about transformation because of the better players being left out unfairly, from what the guys in our 7s side have been doing I think they can offer a new dimension to Springbok rugby that the Afrikaans players just haven't managed up until now. Guys like Justin Geduld and Cheslin Kolbe may be small, but they play the ball better then any of the guys in the Springbok side last season.
