Had he been unwell for some time? I thought I read there were some ceremonies conducted for him earlier in the year? A coronation?

He had the celebration for his 18th anniversary of ascending to Te Kingi earlier this year and last week held a hui with all political parties invited to discuss the coalition governments treatment of Maori.

Had scheduled heart surgery that he didn't come through

IMO a big loss for Maori and the nation. He wasn't afraid to move away from the ceremonial role of Te Kingi and get involved in the dirty business of politics but always stressed the need for unity and that we were one nation. A necessary counterpoint to the more radical calls for separatism.

Tūheitia certainly grew into the role. The choice of his successor will be interesting.

One son was a in a bit of trouble in his younger days. The other son was the golden boy but I read recently that there was a falling out over his choice of wife/girlfriend. A daughter as well too I think.

More than just a falling out

"The Kīngitanga has defended the public shaming by Māori King Tūheitia Potatau Te Wherowhero VII of his eldest son Whatumoana and his marriage to Rangimarie Tahana that featured a whānau walk out mid-ceremony and a bride-in-brawl at the reception.

Sources told the NZ Herald that the statement from the King's office on June 25, 2022, of the disapproval of the marriage to Tahana, was an accumulation of 18 months of deep frustration and hurt, an attempted coup of the Kīngitanga by Whatumoana, mounting debts around the motu, and his dabbling in aspects of black magic....

...At the reception late that night, held at the Taupiri Tavern, there was also an altercation between the bride and member of Whatumoana's whānau.

The Māori King, his son's social ostracism and a whānau wedding walk out

Whānau close to the Māori Kīngi have defended the actions of the father against his son.

Facebook posts talk of a tokotoko (walking stick) being wielded, and one of those involved losing teeth."

Moe mai ra e te rangatira Tuhetia.

But, just to reemphasise a point I've likely made before, he's Tainui's paramount chief, he's not the king of Maori as a whole.

Yeah, the daughter (the youngest) might be the choice, as she seems to have been more involved recently. All very young though.

Phil Lewis, inspiration behind It's a Sin.

Family member and one of the kindest, finest, talented people I've ever met - and much, much more than just a drag queen, entertainer and senior BA Purser. Will be hugely missed by us. RIP.
