    What are peoples views on Paua ?

    Real paua is really rich and quite crunchy so needs to be prepared and cooked right.

    It fucks with my guts like nothing else. When you go and destroy the toilet and can't stand your own smell you know that shit ain't right, literally.

    TMI .

    I like paua a lot but I’d never buy it from a fish and chip shop.

    @bovidae

    They do a nice job up in Seattle too.

    Fresh Halibut in Tofino is a stand out for me, as are deep fried Hiroshima oysters, Iwate sea-urchin, and Hokkaido anthing actually.

    I think deep fried Hiroshima oysters need some help with their marketing .

    Thanks dad. In other news you see haggis as a delicacy so your food reviews are somewhat dubious.

    If you can find a post where I talk up Scottish cuisine then fill ya boots.

    Food is down there below weather and tanning ability on a list of things for a Scotsman to be proud of.

    I also don't really like Whisky and much prefer Rum and Vodka as my spirits of choice.

    @taniwharugby

    Not that kind of scientist 🙂

    I try to make a point of trying things I find a bit off putting (eg Whale) just to see if it’s thaaat good that I should put my principles aside (I’m thinking about veal right now, and freshly killed/dying sashimi still moving). In whale’s case - it’s just not delicious given all the other yummier red meats available (remember, it’s a mammal).

    It’s somewhat understandable given the history here - and the traditional expense of other options (like beef), but it’s just oily, tasteless meat - best done deep fried in batter (think fried chicken). I’ve had it a lot (it often comes as part of Kaisei courses at traditional restaurants) but it’s way down my list of goods to try.

    Deep fried fugu is fucking delicious, and in Abashiri we had a fugu sushi that was fucking awesome. Actually, everything there was awesome. Go.

    If you like Kina, go to Hokkaido. I repeat, if you like Kina: Hokkaido - Shakotan peninsula. You’re welcome.

    No way I'd ever eat whale.

    Eating dog in Asia isn't high on my list either. What next, asking for pork in a kosher restaurant or a juicy steak in India?

    A good steak is my favourite meal. Pretty simple. I used to go well done until watching Ramsay on a show many years ago go into great detail about how the best way to have it is rare. I followed his example ever since.

    Your examples are about being contrary though, not following local customs. So, in India I'd probably go vege for a while.

    Dog in Korea was easily the worst thing I've ever eaten, and I don't understand why anyone would eat that shit.I feel the same way about Crocodile, and bear, which was pretty bad.

    @gt12 Principles for me regarding whale. There are certain foods I won't eat irrespective of customs or traditions.

    I'm having a vege Indian dish tonight given by friends for Diwali.

    I recall croc being quite edible. Haven't had it for a while though.

    Kanga steak is quite nice.

    BTW. Is fugu that puffer fish that'll really fuck jo your day if it's prepared wrong?

    @mn5 I used to eat steak well done, until I asked for it well done in a restaurant, turned up medium, and was awesome, so have had it medium and mooier ever since.
