Alternative needed from the absolute crap of stuff.co.nz

  • Stuff has been my go-to news website for years. It's a good looking website, easy to read, works well on mobile devices and for a long time was perfect for keeping up with the news of the day especially when trying to keep tabs on NZ from overseas.
However as anyone with half a brain (clearly not their target audience anymore) has noticed it has gone way downhill and is at best an annoyance and at worst some place you visit out of habit wasting your time leaving you feeling stupider and less hopeful for humanity's future.
Terrible one sided poorly researched journalisim, headlines about some idiots tinder date, glaring spelling and grammar errors in not only articles but also now headlines, headlines giving spoilers to TV shows not yet possible to see in NZ yet unless you're unemployed and even links to download virus and malware through their 'trusted' banner advertising. They've well and truly 'jumped the shark' and I haven't even talked about the scourge that is stuff nation or stuff comments.
Is this where all news is heading now?, is this actually what people want? Will we get to some tipping point where people collectively turn away from this trash or are we happy having out brains turn to mush?
Is there even anywhere to turn anymore?
So yeah in short..can anyone recommend a good, ideally New Zealand-centric, news website for me

  • not sure of the news side, but this has some good rugby articles on it

Stuff has indeed become incredibly disappointing.

  • not sure of the news side, but this has some good rugby articles on ithttp://thespinoff.co.nz/

Cheers TR, unfortunately today's headlines weren't a good start!

  • haha, I didn't even look at them, went straight to sports...oh well.

Just come to TSF mate, anything worth discussing is on here 😉

Yeah it's starting to come to that by the looks

  • I refute everything you say, I found the article in which Benji Marshall and his wife have decided that now is the perfect time for a baby particularly uplifting.

  • Thespinoff has Gareth Morgan as a contributer..

    Screw that.

not to sports...well not that I saw anyway.

I did say I wasn't sure of the news (which is subjective these days anyway) aspect.

No good if your a cat lover then.

  • Your description if Stuff also sums up NZHerald.co.nz.
    Sad and disappointing.

  • I don't know of any good NZ news sites. As booboo says NZHerald is exactly the same as stuff but with different formatting. NZ journalism is at an all time low.

  • Everymorning when I come into work, I screen the below websites in the following order

    NZ Herald
    Stuff
    BBC News
    BBC Sport
    Sydney Morning Herald

Far and away for me, the best site is the last one.

  • 2 nz news sites that are shit. Neither one will shock you.

    Nailed it.

I think it's actually worse than stuff.

I read an article from there recently that was mocking other so-called news websites for the amount of trash that they were peddling. There were four articles about the Bachelor on the front page alone!

In terms of sports the cricket stuff and the occasional article from Sumo Stevenson is worthwhile but otherwise it is still fairly bland.

This article this morning for instance:
    http://thespinoff.co.nz/28-04-2016/an-englishman-confesses-your-rugby-is-better-than-ours/

What exactly is the point of it, apart from pissing in our pockets?

  • I actually don't mind bbc, there are normally a couple of good in depth articles and they don't have comments so the ferals don't get their chance to urinate on everything.
Haven't actually though about Sydney Morning Herald, might have to do for now

The biggest difference is you'll note that it has a much higher percentage of positive stories. NZ herald is just about all negative.

  • when you consider the tripe that NZH and Stuff serve up from Twattue and Treason, maybe it is the angle these media outlets are looking from...

I will open both pages and look over the headlines for one that catches my interest, but as others point out, mainly negative or social media rubbish...sadly there is far too much of that out there today

  • Classic Stuff headline today

    Basketballer doesn't no own age.

I had to read ith thre time before getting what they meant and that they had rowally screwed it up

Looks like they have fixed it now, next time screen-shot that brilliance

    It's like RAAAINNNNNN

  • To be fair, that is purely a typo due to fat fingers by a rando on the internet.

You know BSG posts here right?  So perfection is expected.

  • and one of the headlines on NZH is about the scrum controversy form the Canes/Chiefs game, with new footage showing the Chiefs cheated!

  • and one of the headlines on NZH is about the scrum controversy form the Canes/Chiefs game, with new footage showing the Chiefs cheated!

    what's wrong with that article?

new footage has emerged and they reported it

  • Can someone tell me what the new footage is? The vid won't run on my browser at work

  • what's wrong with that article?

new footage has emerged and they reported it

the fact it is leading news on the Herald, I don't think it is that news worthy.

Is it really new footage, had someone been hiding it until today?

@Hooroo - It shows a the lineout, Chiefs prop moving freely, then the trainer coming on when Cruden went down, trainer going to prop and then the prop sitting down and being tended to, and then going off.

  • Is it really new footage, had someone been hiding it until today?

From the article..... "The footage is from a camera angle not shown during Sky's live broadcast"

  • Did anyone ever catch the person (s) who were shitting in the pool in Invercargill ?

  • the fact it is leading news on the Herald, I don't think it is that news worthy.

    *Newsworthy

I wonder whether the number of people that click on an article has an effect of moving it up the page?

It's been pretty heavily discussed on a couple of radio stations and Craig Dowd wrote an article on ESPN.com about it.

I clicked on the article and read it with interest, so I reckon it is newsworthy..... Certainly more so that the other articles that have been posted above

  • as I said, just high lights the state of NZ media when some thing like that is news worthy as a main head line above all the bachelor articles, what Jessica Alba is feeding her kid etc.

Not sure if NZH operates like google in terms of clicks.

    Fair enough

    *newsworthy 🙂

  • Did anyone ever catch the person (s) who were shitting in the pool in Invercargill ?

No , they are still at large . Their sphincter hanging like the sword of Damocles over the pool ready to strike at any time .

Unless it's breast milk and they include a picture of her breast I don't care ....

As for the Chiefs, whoops, snapped. 🙂

  • Fair enough

    *newsworthy 🙂

you miss the others I did in there too then, 'specially for you?

  • As for the Chiefs, whoops, snapped. 🙂

Rennie is due to be interviewed on Radio Sport after 4pm to respond.

  • maybe the trainer accidentally stamped on the props foot?

    haha, now is this newsworthy?

  • Thespinoff has Gareth Morgan as a contributer..

    Screw that.

But then TSF has the likes of you and I as contributors.....
