Very much so. FB feed is full of people checking in at dawn services. Dubious as to why you'd do this.

As was mine. The dawn parade I went to last year was littered with camera flashes as trendily dressed people took dozens of photos on their camera phones, presumably to show their mates they were there.

My Facebook newsfeed contained more than a few people who wouldn't have the time of day to yarn to an old veteran on the bus and wouldn't be seen dead in an RSA 364 days of the year, but by 7am on the 25th of April they've already posted half a dozen photos to Facebook with some cliche rant about freedom that quite probably don't believe.

In hindsight, I really need to do a Facebook friend cull...
-

If I can actually get my sons to come along to one when they're older I'll get a photo for FB but I agree with all of the above. Better half and I went and certainly don't feel the need to tell the world and certainly didn't take a photo between us. Nothing I enjoyed more than yarning with my Grandad about his old war stories over a milo when I was little and a beer as I got older.
-
Telling people about it on Facebook is waaaay less real than bragging how much you care on the Fern

I'm glad someone else saw the irony -
CF jnr wanted to attend the dawn service so I took him along (my first time too, don't know why I've never gone before). Very dusty at the cenotaph it must be said. Also it was the first time I've sung Advance Australia Fair too. One and only time this year....

Still don't get this comment
I'm not cut out for drinking rum at 7 am, didn't let it stop me though. -
Isn't it better these people attending, for whatever reason than not attending at all? If they take thier kids, thier kids will no doubt ask or want to find out why they are going, so there is learning for them.
Tpdays generation of checker inner, selfie takers and taking a million photos on thier phone, might seem odd to us, but to many it is the norm.

@taniwharugby we had US marines there today for the first time. They put up a US flag but didn't have anyone from the marines do a speech which was a bit odd.

Was that in Welly @jegga ?
Would have been the Marines that are posted at the Embassy. Not usually anyone senior to make a speech and they probably don't want to intrude on our ceremony. I've not seen them there in an official status before. They often just turn up in the crowd in their number twos.

I'm off to the London dawn service in the morning. Bit of a bitch as the time of year here makes it 5am and you are advised to be there at 4 as you have to get through security.
Haven't missed one in quite a few years now.
I don't have any close rellies that served in action but kind of feel it's a nice thing to add to the general feeling of thanks to those who did.
As for taking pics, I did so at the 100 in Wellington as it was truly impressive. The turnout was huge and the setting there is quite awesome when the sun starts to hit the Oz sandstone memorial. Also the Mrs was in the US so wanted her to see. She got to attend one the yanks arranged on the beach in Florida that year. -

No Paraparaumu , they are over here on an exercise. I thought it was odd because there's quite a strong connection to the marines here on the coast .

I heard on the radio this morning that some protest group (Appease action??) was going to attend one of the Wellington ceremonies in regards to Hagar's book because they thought it was appropriate.
Please tell me that this didn't happen, or if it did, some Vet mowed them down on his/her NZ flag laden mobility scooter.

@Mokey was nothing in the news about it, but man that would not go down well at all. ANZAC day is one that seems to unify such a huge part of NZ that a small section to do that would end badly.
Nail head TR. It does bring 99.9% of us togther although in an unfortunate paradox the freedom our Grandfathers fought for gives people the right to be complete and utter butthurt bitches which is one of the few downsides.

Worst addition to Anzac day obviously comes from Facebook. A filter that enables you to overlay "lest we forget " some poppies and i think a soldier on your vacuous selfie profile pick.
Fuck off

@Mokey haven't heard anything, there's been a distinct lack of Valerie Morse burning flags at the service in recent years though. I wonder if that has anything to do with the "peace activist" being photographed holding a pistol during the Urewera raids?
