Nothing at the billions of dollars level is about ethics. A casual glance at the oil and drug industries shows that.
You either choose to take the billions or you don't. In this case, considering the fact that China could whup us in an afternoon, it might be better to continue the ethics delusions for practicality reasons.
Or have no money and convince everyone that hunger is worth it for ethical puritySo true. It's not like these deals and relationships were established in complete ignorance that China is a one-party dictatorship with a rather appalling human rights record.

We are not going to forego our trade deals just because they run their country different to how we would like it run.
Apart from North Korea, who else aren't we allowed to Trade with?
Iran and Russia have sanctions, Russia bought Winston back in about 2016 and he’s been whining about sanctions and condoning their behaviour ever since .

Say what you want about Helen Clark. At least she could think for herself and make decisions accordingly. The damage is done, saving face will cost us. Probably already is

Yep , she never would have let us look this ridiculous.

@canefan @jegga Helen says England must let that terrorist back into UK.
Is what she did tantamount to Treason?

Hahahaha, I think they should too . they should also carry on arresting people for calling trannys men on twitter and elect Corbyn and then we can pick out the best and brightest from the inevitable exodus/stampede from the Uk
Sorry @catogrande you’re probably not going to make the cut. .

If we let Huawei implement the 5G rollout here in NZ we might as well CC in the Chinese military in all our online activity. It's a bad idea to let them have a dominant position here.
I'm reasonably ignorant around all this but didn't I read somewhere the UK is implementing it? Surely they wouldn't allow that to happen and have something in place to prevent it?

@Sneakdefreak although letting China reem them kinda goes against the whole reason for Brexit in the first place in wanting Britain to regain a bit more control of things.

The Uk govt just gave them the go ahead to join their 5g network.
I wonder if them being in the middle of trade deals outside of Europe had anything to do with that.

Dunno but it’s a pretty big call to make if they are putting trade ahead of compromising 5 eyes

That's something of a relief. I'm in the Groucho Marx camp in that I wouldn't want to join a club that would let me in. I'll just sneak into France wearing a yellow jacket and spend the rest of my days eating and drinking too much. Oh. Wait...

The NZ/China relationship has been getting worse for a number of years - Winnie's meddling has just accelerated that.
How much of the US antipathy to Huawei is that by not going with US technology to build 5G the NSA's ability to electronically eavesdrop is compromised? Double whammy China can spy more /US less.
Personally I prefer Bao to Burgers and I'd rather hitch my wagon to the rising superpower than the one that's being eclipsed. Let's face it we can't trust our "friends and allies" let alone our enemies so fuck em all I say

I think it's more likely that Ericsson is the replacement infrastructure provider (other options are Nokia and Samsung). Alcatel Lucent are French/US but I wouldn't bank on Spark touching them with a bargepole after the XT debacle.
So not the US that is looking to shoehorn in. -

Are you somehow confused into thinking that the UK govt is competent?
For starters they have banked on low frequency (700Mhz) band 5G before even waiting to see what the best equipment being developed is.
NZ has held back numerous chunks of the spectrum to leverage off development by others. More likely that something like 3.5 or 26 Ghz will be used.
The other 'consensus' band being discussed is 600Mhz which NZ currently uses half of for Digital TV so only half is available and even that requires a shift of radio microphones.
Basically equipment companies will develop gear to run within parameters. The first big buyer out of the blocks will lead the way for the others. WE are keeping options open on both bands and suppliers
