That utter fuckstick called terrorist attacks a "perpetual irritant" yet now he gets all emotional? Fucking disgraceful hypocrite. Only gives a shit when his own "people" get slaughtered.
Sorry to get "political" but fuck that guy and his crocodile tears.
I'm not watching that video, but the way some people on the left are using this as a stick to beat the right with is fucking horrible. Those same people rightly say "all Muslims are not responsible for Islamic terror" but can't seem to apply the same standard consistently.
People on the right are also calling this out as an absolutely despicable act, because obviously not everyone on the right is an extremist, so using broad sweeping terms like "the right" when talking about fringe radicals only furthers the divide, which is exactly what this scumbag wants.
Both sides are guilty of this rhetoric when talking about the left, the right, Muslims, Christians etc. I really wish we could all be more careful with our language when talking about extremists. The majority of us are really great people, and I really want to see all of us decent folk come together and unite as a result of this, not only because that is the only way forward, but also because it is exactly what this piece of shit and others like him don't want.
Sorry if this is too political but when every man and his dog is trying to score points it's hard not to comment.

@No-Quarter yep, plenty of political BS you could be rolling out about this terrorist act from all sides of the spectrum, but that helps no one.
Hopefully, NZ as has been the case in the past, can lead the world in how we respond to this and with the ways we now act to try and make our country safer for those that call it home in the future

Any chance we can we have a separate political thread for this in the politics section in case this goes like all the other politics threads?
I am guessing yes. But the coverage is without a doubt political, which makes it extricably linked. Be nigh on impossible to do it fairly. Do we seperate duscussion of motive? Gun control?

Agreed. We have had a couple of political posts deleted after all.
It seems that the information about the incident itself is pretty much known. So I'd suggest cutting from a couple of pages ago and moving to the Politics thread.

It’s much different than say 9/11 which was a shock but I was always too far removed. This feels much more personal despite being thousands of kms away.
But, I don’t really want to get involved in the usual politic stuff in this place. All good, I’ll just exit the thread when the Politics kicks off in earnest.

I think we will try to keep it mostly focussed. I see your point.

unfortunately acts of terror such as this are very likely strongly linked to someones political (or religious) ideals, so unfortunately it is inevitable some politicising will happen, but the fact there has been to date next to none from our Politicians is great (that I have seen at any rate)

A citizen from another country performed the most evil act in NZs history. He’s also spent a lot of time flying back and forward to suspect counties like Turkey and Pakistan.
Once the shock has died down I’d be hoping our govt makes a few hard please explain requests to several foreign agencies.
Imagine the shit storm if this was a kiwi who did this in Australia or the States.

Was not on the radar of either Australian or NZ security agencies. Those are the ones that count.
I would suggest that filtering and identification procedures will be gone over in fine detail as we speak.
Good thing we have firearms registries and such. Make the job of tagging suspect individuals with firearms and travel patterns far easier than in the States.

if I remember rightly John Howard made massive changes in Aus after Port Arthur didn't he ?

A full inquiry, led by a highly-experienced and respected judge, into all the causes and events that led up to yesterday's horrific terrorist murders should happen.
While I strongly support tougher gun laws, such as a general prohibition on semi-automatic weapons for anyone except the police and the army, I would also caution against too much instant, knee-jerk legislation.

The fact an individual has travelled to these states and isn't flagged is a failure.
I'll say this as someone who has been shooting all his life, there's no requirement for normal citizens to be able to procure semiautomatic weapons.

Caught a bit of this guy on ABC News Radio this am.
http://sydney.edu.au/medicine/people/academics/profiles/philip.alpers.php
And yes he is the guy from Fair Go.
Apparently NZ has fairly slack firearm laws and no registration of firearms.

@Rancid-Schnitzel yeah I didn't know who he was but found it really odd when he started to talk about how people are trying to not take a hard line now on how terrorists should be punished just because they're not Muslim. Say what?

I think I mentioned this earlier but prior to Port Arthur I believe Australia's gun laws were similar to NZ's. Post Port Arthur there was a complete ban on Semi Auto Rifles and Shotguns. The govt bought back thousands of guns and then pretty much every year they have an amnesty where you can take any unregistered/illegal gun to your local Police station and hand it in consequence free.
There is currently a Firearm Registry that handles all of the record keeping and licenses. Once you have a licence you must have an approved gun safe installed which is bolted to the floor, wall etc. This safe should be inspected by the Police. Every gun you own has a serial number and is matched with your licence. The Police can randomly check your licence and ask you to show all the guns registered to you. You need a specific licence for Pistols and must be part of a gun club.
The ammunition is to be stored separately.
The Police are informed prior to attending any address if there is a registered firearm holder and how many guns could be on the property.
There are a number of laws in each state allowing Police to confiscate guns due to Domestic Violence, Mental Health etc.
There is no doubt illegal firearms still exist and if someone really wanted a semi automatic and had the funds and connections could get one. There are also still plenty of shootings in Australia but I imagine it would have been very difficult for this nutjob to get the same guns here in Oz.
Surprisingly in NSW at least the General Duties Police have no access to high powered firearms and receive no training in their use. They only have access to their appointed Glock. They do not carry additional firearms in their vehicles. Only the special tactical squads have access to these guns. So the NZ Police have more access and training with semi automatics than NSW Police.
