What an age we live in.
Communications minister Paul Fletcher may have successfully convinced the likes of Google and Netflix to limit the impact of their high definition streams on the Australian network but now he may face a new challenge: swelling demand for one of the world's top adult sites in the light of its new worldwide freemium promotion and a captive home-bound audience.

@Victor-Meldrew He should have banned his own citizens from traveling to be fair, the Chinese had their shit on lock down by that point.
Looking at the numbers, it's patently obvious to me that the growth is in no small measure due to escalation in testing. On the 18th they had 7,783 confirmed cases, a week later 65,778. They're simply identifying more accurately who already has it.

I'm no fan of the man, but why just criticize Trump?
It's looking increasingly possible, even likely, that the key infection point outside of Asia was a ski bar in Austria in mid-January and the authorities covered it up.
No Austrians in that bar? They didn't have a confirmed case until 25th of February.

@booboo Got myself a 10 pack from Woolies Metro this morning. Rather than do my morning walk and then shop I reversed it and wandered in at 8am, did some shopping, no TP, so I just asked one if the workers what's the best time ... he said now and went and got the trolley. All of the other 8 shoppers made a beeline for it as soon as he brought it out.
Would still like to get some Coles So Soft as in your pic, but beggars can't really be choosers.

1.4% positive of those tested, which actually doesn't mean anything, just Australians are getting tested...
And with only 12 deaths so far, now is a good time to reflect on how many Australians die on a daily basis and the economic damage we're wreaking on this. All because NSW Health and Border Force let sick people off a cruise ship and Italy.

Now thought possible that first British victim visited the bar in Ischgl in Jan 15-19 and then infected his wife & kids. One of his friends was American and he was also ill. Austrian Plod are investigating a cover-up by local health officials.
Oxford University study also indicates Coronavirus reached the UK no later than mid-Jan which may back this up.

What the US got wrong - along with so many other countries, was selectively isolating who to ban. It made no sense to me then, and still doesn't, to ban flights from the Schengen countries and still allow flights from the UK and travel across from Canada. I get Western Europe was the target but it was too easy to circumvent the ban. As I also said then; it was already too late - the US numbers pre the ban showed they had lost control. It started the economic melt down for zero effect.
Better to have gone hard, but US seems to have been confused about what approach to take. Not helped (as with Oz) by their federal system.
NZ hasn't got everything right by a long way, but at least, in the main, the messaging has been very clear and has therefore gained public acceptance.

@antipodean I think it more reflects how rampant the virus was in US before they actually starting testing properly. You cannot have 80,000 positives without the virus having been active for some time. I suspect the US was one of the first countries outside China to start spreading, its the only way you can have such big numbers and such a high detect rate.

It's easy to look at the overall stats and wonder what the big deal is, but the biggest concern all along has been the ability of the health system to handle the increased load, especially going into winter. If we hit capacity, especially when it comes to ICU beds, then it would be an absolute disaster not just for people with Coronavirus but for anyone that needs urgent hospitalisation.
Increased numbers of hospital staff also falling ill is another big concern. This virus is far more contagious than the common Flu.

A fawning media certainly helps here (and to be clear I strongly support them being fawning in a time of crisis). The US acted far quicker than most countries and Trump was lampooned for it, now he's being lampooned for not going quick enough. Media calls it a Chinese virus in Jan and Feb, he calls it a Chinese virus and that makes him a racist. He talks about the promising benefits of an anti-malarial medication and some morons drink fish cleaner and mainstream media runs it as Trump encourages drinking poison. Its pretty transparent as to what is going on and perhaps consequently he is right now at an all-time high approval rating.
Time will tell as to which leaders have handled this constantly moving unprecedented situation best in the long term but I don't think anyone could now say with a straight face that the early travel bans against Europe and China didn't save a lot of lives.

@Rembrandt I deliberately didn't mention Trump because there's enough threads already that have turned into a shit fight about him.
I think every politician on earth has an incredibly thankless task. At any time but particularly now. I'm certain they are all doing what they think is best for their populations, based on the advice they are being given.
What this has shown up is that very few countries were prepared for a Pandemic despite years of warnings. Those that seem to have reacted best are those that had a practice run with SARS.
Leaders need to show leadership in times of crisis, convey empathy and understanding and improve morale. Don't sugar coat it but convince people that despite everything there is a plan and that we will come through. Churchill was personally responsible for some of the worst decisions the UK made in the first half of the 20th century but was voted the greatest Britain ever because he could do all of the above.
Some world leaders are demonstrating calm resolution and determination. Others seem confused and panicky. I don't necessarily blame them, but it isn't helping their country's and their constituents get through this.
Trump's been an incredibly divisive figure all his life. Probably not the best figurehead for a crisis like this for that very reason - even if everything he does and says is spot on. Its been pretty obvious for weeks that the US is in for a hell storm - unprepared, complacent, bloated bureaucracy, not very agile, lack of resources for its underclasses. They also have a lot of factors in their favour rich, talented, entrepreneurial, great research, massive industrial complex, good logistics. Squaring that circle would be a herculean task for any President.

@dogmeat I saw a quote from Bill Gates in 2015 saying a pandemic like this is entirely predictable and there's no excuse for countries to not be prepared.
It's a tough one though. Preparing is expensive, requires you to try and predict future events, and you don't get any value out of it unless disaster strikes.
I work in tech and it's the same - all of the system resiliency, disaster recovery, monitoring/alerting of problems etc etc - it mostly gets put in place after an incident instead of before as we're too busy delivering things that provide immediate value. Not saying we don't prepare, but our preparation can never cover every scenario.

I've got some DVDs with rugby stuff on them around here somewhere... Maybe even some old files ripped from a PVR ...
