the queue might be 250 metres but that's 125 ppl. So the moment they open the queue is going to almost disappear. That wasn't true of Eastern Europe. Been there, done that, couldn't find a T-Shirt
It doesn’t disappear immediately if they only let in 10 shoppers at a time, which is what they were doing when I went to New World on Sunday morning. 1 hour 15 to get into the shop, 20 mins to do the shopping.

On the supermarkets, my sense is that some regions and communities have had it luckier than others. Talking to/hearing about families in some parts of Auckland, their local supermarkets have been short/out of some of the basics for two weeks whenever they've been.
While we've been very lucky where we are and it's almost normal shopping. One day felt a bit like the week before Christmas, but only flour and Vitamin C were completely cleaned out.
For the 90's Waikato alumni, for some weird reason I've always remembered a line in Nexus reviewing the long-vanished local 3 Guys supermarket: "like shopping in Moscow".

Been thinking about the analogy, along with the bread lines you can add a guy in uniform on TV talking in a paternalistic manner threatening to arrest you for breaking the rules. (Seriously, that chief of police doesn't come off nearly as well as the doctor).
Cult of personality leader as well

My (East German, grew up a Communist) wife’s favourite joke from those times.
A woman goes into town, sees the queue outside a shop and joins it. After an hour she gets to the front and asks for a portion of whatever the meat is that’s available. Come the reply “Oh no, maine frau, we are the shop with no cheese. The shop with no meat is across the road”.
And yes, she thinks this feels like East Germany, only with internet and fewer potato-shaped people.

Some promising progress on ventilators: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/413111/covid-19-nz-sources-more-ventilators-amid-rampant-global-demand
Also a sobering thought this morning. Especially for the meh, Covid only kills very old people with pre-existing medical conditions anyway line of thinking.
People at that late stage don't get intubated in the best of times. Full scale ventilation is for the rest of us...

I seriously need some sport as a diversion. Arguing about this shit isn't as much fun.
If the coaches had done their job and got Rieko and Akira Ioane fit and firing we would have won the RWC. There I said it.

They should send a plane to get them before anyone snaffles them up

Speaking to family in Auckland it appears to be quite different there compared to the rest of the country. When I was last in the supermarket (Countdown this time) they didn't even have a limit on bread anymore and the shelves were full. Hand sanitisers and liquid soap have always been in short supply so either stock is going off the shelves as soon as it arrives or there are still problems with the supply chain on these products.

Our 2 locals are pretty well stocked except for flour and yeast, and most importantly they are very quiet. The 3rd one services a larger catchment and is too busy at the moment so I steer clear. But pre-lockdown they had run out on most canned foods among other things

WRONG THREAD, but totally.
not only that, but since we're having a pile on (to one of the finest coachs I've ever seen in Hansen), we should have had Luatua there filling the 6 jersey, and Piutau carving up from the back.
Fark, it's sliding doors isn't it. Better Blues environment, and maybe, just maybe, Faumauina, Piutau, Luatua, Toeavea play out their careers in NZ.

@Bovidae Hand sanitiser supply is being snaffled by the DHB's.
I am going to two supermarkets both are reasonably well stocked but one feels a lot safer. The other always has a queue and whilst the majority of people are well behaved the two occasions I have been there have been people who think nothing of stepping right in front of you to grab what they need off the shelves.
The staff at both though are very good - still smiling, friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately the feral one has the much better beer selection....
-
@dogmeat I have no problem with those in the frontline having first access to hand sanitiser. They need it.
My local experience is that New World and Countdown seem to have different methods to minimise community transmission. As I noted previously, New World has markings on the floor to remind customers to remain 2 m apart while when I was at Countdown a few days ago there was less people allowed into the store. I prefer the NW method but I would suggest they also include arrows so the flow of traffic down the aisles is only in one direction.
Anyway, off to the supermarket...

@Bovidae wife went to the 'local' Countdown this morning, was very busy, much busier than the much larger and better Pak'n'Save which is only about 4km further, where she does her usual big shop.
She said people are adhering to the rules, but then someone they know drives past, they go over, lean into the window to chat....goes in, buys them something, hands it to them through the window.
Its the little things like that, getting your bins in as well, wash hands immediately as the rubbish guys are touching bins from hundreds of households...
-
@taniwharugby I went to the supermarket but saw the length of the queue outside and drove back home. The biggest crowd outside I've seen, including the night of the lockdown. I will try again tonight as 12 pm obviously wasn't a good time.
Rubbish day here today but they aren't collecting recyclables during these 4 weeks so only bags go outside. We go to bins only in July though.

I just leave the recycling crates out for at least a day, no problems then
