It's the language police again

  • So we got flagged by google ads again. This is the quarterly reminder to watch your language..

This warning was a generic one across the whole forum (we usually get told the thread).

I've removed a handful of posts that were likely offenders (mostly from the pictures thread, the movies thread & the royal drama)
Yes the jokes were relatively mild.

Then we got a more specific flag related to some politics threads.

The TR thread is gone because I couldn't be bothered tidying it up and the last week of the British pol thread was removed.
It seems we can't run ads and talk about the crime of children getting ____. That r word was being used a lot and is likely to trigger their algorithm. I can understand that one.

  • apologies

    but also booooo

  • @Duluth said in It's the language police again:

That r word was being used a lot and is likely to trigger their algorithm. I can understand that one.

I don't, assuming that I have the correct word.
That word is a part of our language and has Latin origins, it's not like anyone has promoted the act, but there you go.
Google will have their way and we can all shut up about atrocities, not talk about them and hope they go away without any action from people that might get together to help prevent it.

    This world baffles me.

  • @Snowy I agree, but it's also a case of advertisers asking not be put against certain content.

In the future we may be able to make the Politics area ad-free to avoid this sort of restriction, but for now it's getting flagged.

It's also content with multiple f-words in the same sentence, at a guess. Multiple offenders of that (including me), and unintended context when you do that.

Just use replacement words, has the same effect.

  • @Snowy said in It's the language police again:

I don't, assuming that I have the correct word.

    Rhymes with ape or aping

I understand that people selling ad space would have that as limit. Remember we have plenty of colourful language near those words too. It's not a dry description of events
If something is going to trigger an algorithm that makes sense

  • Not having a go at you guys, just that it is a normal word in every newspaper and media outlet as well as common usage.

"originates from the Latin rapere (supine stem raptum), "to snatch, to grab, to carry off".

It does seem bldy stupid of GGle to try eliminate words from our language was my point.

Oh. Not one I follow then. My ignorance was the giveaway

I have just discovered that there really isn't one. Unusual for English that they all have different connotations. Molestation perhaps? Can I say that?

Honestly, if I can't use the English language to express myself and have to restrict my vocabulary...

GGle, no more maps for me, no more chrome, no more fcking anything from them.

I enjoy my time on the Fern and the interaction with you guys so GGLe can GFT.

  • @Snowy violation?

Must say I don't often talk about drapes.

Sexual assault seems to be the current phrase in use

  • @dogmeat said in It's the language police again:

Neither do I. In fact I have probably never typed it on here but it is a bit bldy stupid not to be able to use a word that has been around for at least a couple of thousand years and isn't even an expletive.

@jegga said in It's the language police again:

I thought that could just be a grope or something? So doesn't really match up with grape to me.

Seems to have become a bit of a catchall for seedy behaviour. Could be something to do with googles word policing .

Yeah, it has changed in context. Being a bit weird can now be referred to as being a bit grapey. Language evolves but not as quickly as the language Nazis.

  • This has been going on for years with gaming streamers on the major platforms (twitch and youtube). Any number of streamers, including some pretty edgy mofo's, have really reined in their language to stay within the platform rules. There are always a few instances of streamers being banned or suspended for X, Y, Z behaviour which often involves 'bad' language or going hard at someone (aka bullying). But generally people think it has improved the scene - if only Twitch would grow a pair and start banning the blatant booty/boobie streamers - that's an entire meme universe in itself.

    Wait, what?

  • @jegga dude. Cam girl is surely a term familiar to the Jegga!!?

Trust me, the thot streamers on Twitch aren't that flash, and there are far better sites to visit.

See, Mokey isn't the only one that does research for the greater good 🙂 😘 you are welcome!

I’m questioning you wanting to ban thots , a girls got to make a living .

  • @jegga if they stuck to insta it'd be all good. The annoyance is more about them never getting strikes for nudity when they (admins/twitch) go super hard on anyone else. The common thinking is that those streamers give the admins free access to their patreon lol... where the actual good stuff is posted.

Instagram is pretty strict about censoring stuff now . Last year there were a lot of ethots getting doxxed and having the irs set on them because they weren’t declaring the money they were earning on Patreon etc .

  • Meanwhile we failed our review

Sport and Off Topic are clean now. Politics is still too smutty

So I've killed a few more posts.. we'll see what they say now

I can kind if understand it all. I don't know what ethots is but assume it's women who like taking their clothes off on the internet.

    Ok boomer

  • @Duluth are they running words together including spaces? say if you have the word supeR, which ends in an R is immediately prior to ape, is it running the together to get the trigger word?

@dogmeat post above refers to another word for curtains, which has a 'd' in the front but would be a trigger word, is that sort of thing triggering it too?

  • @taniwharugby I'm sure it's smarter than that. It'll read sentences etc

  • @Duluth said in It's the language police again:

So we basically can't discuss anything that might be construed as containing sxual cntnt. The internet is doomed by a company that helped create it and nobody will ever go beyond txt spk spllg.

    How Orwellian of you ggl.

I just looked through that and I really don't see how the Fern could be culpable of any of it except:

contains a significant amount of or prominently features obscene or profane language.
Examples: Swear or curse words, variations and misspellings of profane language

Those guys don't support the Black Claps. Difficult to support them without expletives.

    (Ah I said clap - that's a slang word for a disease).
I really don't know what will be acceptable and you might as well shut it all down.

Our attempts to express ourselves with poor spelling won't work. Fork.

    Is that actually their problem?

wait until the Warriors kick off. And it becomes apparent certain Super teams are not at the expected levels

But that will be nothing, nothing i tell you, compared to if we get to June and the ABs are utterly hopeless under Foster. We'll be blacklisted forever.

A few more software modifications? We already know what fluffybunny, is and piston wristed gibbon, so add the R word and probably F word? We will know what is being said.
