@MiketheSnow ah man I needed to hear that today! Used to love ole Bic in the 00s. I do a pretty good impression of her singing Sway too but I will spare you all. Defo going to binge on Bic later.

@Crucial Phil Judd is NZ's answer to Syd Barrett.
Brilliant talent but some serious problems...
Yep, always liked Counting The Beat.
Phil's parents owned a dairy shop in Frederick Street, Hastings - opposite Mahora Primary School.

It's funny as just last night I was pondering who my favourite singer is (not necessarily my favourite band) and I couldn't go past Dave Dobbin.
I have been through this thread and one song I have always loved is "Not Given Lightly" by Chris Knox. I'm not sure if it has been mentioned.
There was a band, from Wellington, I think, when I was at Uni, had some cracking songs. One of them started with the riff from Smoke on the water and just before the lyrics kicked in, the went "SIIIIIIIKE!!!!" and started singing "New Kids on the block, don't give up your day jobs"
We often went to Banshee Reel concerts and our flat had their album.
I'm stuffed if I can remember the name of them though.

@Bovidae Julia Dean and Fur Patrol
This led me to discover that Julia is still making good music and looking quite milfy too!
Also in the good lookers basket Fiona McDonald and Headless Chickens (love her stuff with Strawpeople as well)
George is better...

One hit wonder, but wonderful
Sad story behind that too, Pauly Fuemana the man behind OMC he made a crap ton of money from that song. Went pretty high in the US Billboard charts, but he was taken advantage of by family and friends. Pretty much died broke, young too.

Some early teen tunes.
Absolutely loved pumpkinhead back in the day. Saw them open up for FNM at the Logan Campbell and they were absolutely epic. Their story afterwards is very sad. Apparently the singer squandered all their cash on drugs and completely lost his way. Pretty sad state of affairs.
Was at that gig
Saw them a couple of times at this tiny venue in tauranga that I cant remember the name of. Pretty good.live act.
Shihad and HLAH played there as well

Not Given Lightly was our first dance song. The band we hired learned it for is and did a great job.
My wedding had a fucking cracker of a soundtrack

Also Shihad are not only the best live act to come put of NZ, but they are the equal of anyone i have ever seen.
-
The first band that popped into my head when I saw the title was the Verlaines.
The Chills Pink Frost is a worthy mention.
Might as well throw in The Clean
All this is well before my time. A lot of the US bands I listened to in the 90's recommended flying nun stuff.. Sonic Youth, Pavement etc.
I probably wouldn't have paid it any attention otherwise -

Absolutely.
I was trying to find the video of "Run" on YT and ended up watching a video commentary from the band released a few days ago. They mention a young Ruby Rose wagged school that day to appear in the video. The shit you learn on the internet.

Run is a great song, must be one of the unluckiest bands ever. Decided to take on the States just days and weeks before 9/11.. all of a sudden the word jihad becomes a big word there and here’s this foreign band who’s name happens to rhyme...

Forgot to post this yesterday, I think this might be one of my straight up top NZ rock songs:
Opps, nearly forgot to explain my thoughts as per instructions in OP. Was on a trip down to Welly to watch an AB test with my usual rugby watching mate in the 90s and he'd grabbed us some tickets to Garageland at some pub. The previous trip down he'd got Radiohead tickets ... I hate Radiohead with a passion ... so I was a bit apprehensive. But I loved the whole show, bought the album on tape, Last Exit to Garageland, and blasted it on every roadtrip I went on that year.
