Max on pole. Tsunoda was 15th fastest one place behind Lawson. They both gained a position because Sainz got a penalty

Pretty good result all things considered for Lawson. Beat Tsunoda which was main goal but a fair bit behind his team mate.

Race start should be spicy as you can be sure that Tsunoda will go all guns blazing to get past Lawson at first corner.

Odds on a crash where they blame each other should be tight

That couldn’t have gone worse. Boring, slow and no confidence.

Hmmm. Looking his f1 career is just a cameo ATM.

Not the most interesting race. Very little movement and people stuck in DRS trains. Top 6 finished in qualifying order and the top 10 was the same as qualifying just with Hadjar and Hamilton swapping

Lawson's team went for a gamble staying out very long on the mediums.. I don't think they were betting on the softs making up the difference, they were hoping for a safety car and a cheap pit. Probably not a bad bet given the grass fires that happened the rest of the weekend

So I guess Tsunoda has one more race to do something then Hadjar comes in 😉

    Hadjar looks very fast

The most exciting thing during the entire snorefest was Lando trying to push his way past Max at the exit to pit lane...

Quali was critical, and unfortunately Liam needed to get to Q3 to push on for the points

@Duluth Why is Hadjar so quick? In fact, Kimi, Hadjar and Bearman are all doing very well. I think Liam might get the nickname The Emperor's New Clothes and if he cannot keep up with Hadjar I suspect his F1 career maybe very short.

I think Red Bull have done Lawson a disservice. His narrative has gone from young driver with potential who filled in for Ricciardo to this kid must be the second coming of Max or he's a bust. I hope he is given a chance to get comfortable in the new car, and he has a contract for at least a year to allow him to do this

There is some truth in that I think.

Next race he won’t have the media circus in the build up which will hopefully help him.

This is Lawsons F1 career finishes, how much more time does he need?
    13,11,9,11,17,9,16,9,16,14,17,15,16,17

    In contrast Antonelli
    4,8,6

And even Bearman in a Haas has almost as many top 10 finishes.

Tsunoda has raced in F1 in the same team for 5 years.... Like all elite sports, continuity can't be underestimated. Maybe he won't be good enough to have a multi-year contract when it's all said and done. But being given a chance to have a stable situation is not too much to ask

@canefan Yep that is fair, it is just interesting how some drivers like Bearman, Hadjar, Antonelli have slotted in and had instant speed. I just don't think Lawson was anywhere near ready to be promoted and now his confidence is somewhat shot and once that goes you will always struggle for that extra bit of pace.

I hope I'm wrong and he can get some pace back but you have to say this year has been Annus horribilis by any measure and given the speed of Hadjar he is up against it.

I think Lawson had that in his first stint in F1. I know that doesn't show in the raw results you posted.. however the perception at the time was that he was out performing the car

The question is if he can get back to that.

Because of the change of teams he has significantly less time with his car than everyone else. Qualifying 14th and out qualifying a Red Bull in those circumstances was a pass mark IMO.

He needs to catch up with Hadjar fast though

@Duluth Looks like only 2 top t10 qualifying results in 14 attempts. But hopefully he has the entire season to get some consistency and hopefully results will improve. Well they kind of have to I guess.

    @chimoaus

Sure but that first stint was widely praised and his results were basically the ceiling of that car. That context is missing from the numbers.

He needs to find that 2023 speed again

Lawson nearly half a second up on Tsunoda and Hadjar. Interestingly the Verstappen replacement is 4 seconds further back.

Mind you, only fifteen minutes into P1, so maybe not the full story.

Lawson sets faster time than Hadjar and Tsunoda in P1.

Perhaps just the session he needs to fill the confidence meter.

Fastest of any RB driver wasn't he?
