Bloody hell.... almost worth blasting back as far as you can and setting up some form of barrier.

Geologically NZ is quite young. Over here we have the odd shake - I have never experienced earthquaker - but its a damn sight flatter, generally speaking.

Geologically Australia is boring as batshit. Nothing ever really happens. NZ on the other hand, dynamic as fuck - a Geologist's dream. Right on the boundary between the Australian and Pacific plate. Earthquakes, volcanoes, nowhere is safe. Good times!

I think a few geologists like pulling up some ancient shit 🙂 Instead of the little whippsnapper rocks they get in the shaky isles 😉

Not just volcanoes - ACTIVE volcanoes. None of that dormant for 50,000 years shit.

The poor Olds had to evacuate in the middle of the night, thankfully able to head to high ground in jville. I see ferner chowie had to sit in a car in strathmore. Sucks. Sounds like no major damage to anyone I know thankfully!

Well maybe some good will come out of this and a decent road from the top of the SI will be built. The Kaikoura Rd can then be cleared for a tourist route only.
Lyttleton Harbour's profits are going to take a jump for a while I guess while all road and rail freight to ChCh has to go by sea instead. Expect high petrol prices in the SI for some time.

    Thank goodnees Ritchie is there!

That is a massive hunk of pasture wiped out. Pretty much unfixable in terms of cost vs return.

That really is an incredible picture.

Yeah it sure is, utter destruction. All I can say is thank fuck the epicentre wasn't directly underneath a city - that would level just about any building.

Would have been interesting times if Wellington had been flattened with a big storm following on its heels.

I can reliably say there's flooding fucken everywhere at the moment. With tragedy there's always those stories in adversity that restore your faith that maybe there is a higher being watching us.....

mine was the news that 400 litres of beer that I brewed with a bunch of mates was completely unharmed.

How that story didn't appear on 3 news is beyond me. I blame Hilarys departure.

As it is, I see the Stats NZ building has had a floor collapse - nobody in it because the CBD buildings are still closed pending engineering reports etc, but had that been during the day with people at work...

Not something that will inspire a great deal of confidence in other people who have to work in those Wellington City buildings!

@Godder The glass on highrises in NZ isn't really all that flash which is a real worry in a quake. A glazier gave me the run down on it a few years ago and said keep an eye out in the news and you'll notice in Wellington there's a lot of issues with it. He was right, in fact a sheet fell two stories off a building I'm working on , fortunately it happened on a sunday otherwise one of us would have been underneath it. I shudder to think what a major earthquake means to a glass front highrise in Wellington

    For example

    May 11, 2016  /  Regional

Glass balcony sheets fall from Wellington high rise

Glass balcony sheets fall from Wellington high rise

Heavy glass sheets have fallen off an apartment building in central Wellington - and it's not the first it has happened on the high rise.

In my younger years at Vic Uni I did a project on how prepared Wellington is for a big earthquake. I can't remember exactly but something like half the buildings in the CBD will not stand up to a big Earthquake. Courtney Place was particularly bad with old buildings. That was a long time ago now so I'm sure things have improved a bit, but without a doubt there will still be buildings not up to standard.

@No-Quarter the standards were raised a few years back, the Cuba st end in particular has building that might not be worth strengthening and Wellington population of hipsters could be decimated in a decent quake.

@No-Quarter Plenty of the buildings having issues are actually quite new. The GCSB one in Pipitea is only a few years old and is apparently a mess. The Defence HQ was built to EQ standards on rubber base foundations but that seems to mean it also gets a sway going that continues well after the shake and makes a real mess inside.
I used to work in the State Insurance Bldg (Darth Vaders Pencil Case) and that sways like crazy in the wind. I've felt a few shakes in there but this one would have been scary as.
The new BNZ bldg and the Stats Bldg are both down at the Port on reclaimed land that just doesn't seem up to it (although the biggest problem they had in 2013 with the BNZ one was the design of the false roof. Not enough holding the ceiling panels in place and they all crashed down wrecking everything).
I have also been in some '70s buildings in Welly that are solid as fuck. In that style it seems you head to the stairwell as that is by far the most structurally sound piece and is likely to remain standing even if everything else comes down.

Just be careful with that. A lot of stairwells were not designed for seismic drift during the earthquakes and wound up collapsing in Christchurch.

    Notable example: Forsyth Barr

Give me a modern building over a 1970's building any day of the week please
