Blues 13+. The bench will make the difference, and the pack should be on top.

Yeah if Manu and Tupou can lead the tight five around well enough - there is enough class in the loosies and backs that they should be able to have a good shot in this game.

For what it's worth I believe the Rebels also have some injuries in their locking stocks.

Of course round 1 is always tough to pick - and with the new high tackle laws some yellow or red cards could really change things.

@African-Monkey said in Blues vs Rebels:

Can't help but worry about that lineout. Hopefully they can step up to the task. Good choice naming Tupou as captain imo. The guy looks to have real leadership qualities from what I've seen of him at Counties.

Yep, MOulds has had plenty of issues at lineout time in his career, swings wildly from very good to poor, hopefully he can get more consistancy with the good cos the rest of his game is up there.

Tupou has got a reasonable amount of experience now and Luatua should be able to take some of the pressure off GCT/Scrafton

I'm more concerned about Moulds, he has gotten the yips a few times in his career. Hopefully he reacts well to the pressure.. I really rate the rest of his game so if he sorts the throwing out he could have a big year.

Edit: basically what @taniwharugby said.. posted at the same time

Hopefully with Moulds they start out throwing to Luatua at 2 for the first few to get the confidence going.

Wish I could share the same optimism as a lot of you others on here but this fixture screams a bit of the Reds game from last season where we should have gone up and hammered them but ended up getting mashed up at set piece. Either way I can't see whoever wins winning by more than 7.

I don't know if I'm going to be the kiss of death, but I suspect the Blues will win comfortably in the end. The better backline that will be well served by Pulu's arrival. I look at the Rebels and there's nothing exciting to add to last year.

Exciting team! Really looking forward to seeing the effect Pulu has on this side. Also looking forward to seeing Nanai improve even further, he's like a ready made replacement for Ben Smith.

Notable absentees from the Rebels are Wallaby front rowers Hanson and Smith and the two Fijian wingers KOROIBETE and NAIVALU. Maddocks is a promising youngster but normally a fullback. They also have two opensiders at 6 and 7 along with Timani at lock gives them less height so may alleviate some of our concerns with the Blues lineout. Hodge and Inman are a good midfeild so the battle with ours should be fun. Scrum should be a major advantage for the Blues, little experience in the reserve front row for Melbourne.

More confident in the Blues with that Rebels team being named - Blues should have too much firepower if they can keep their heads.

I know next to nothing about Gerard Cowley-Tuioti and the poor guy doesn't even get a mention in that presser.
    This is his debut?

@Crucial He played a few mins at the end of last season.

He really came on strong for Harbour in Mitre 10 Cup - from what I saw I thought his motor had improved big time.

@Crucial Played off the bench against the Brumbies last season. Had a very good couple of seasons at North Harbour so hopefully he can make the step up.

That's the starting team I expected. The bench is a bit stronger than I thought it would be, which is good.

It seems Pryor has been overtaken by Taramai for now, which is a bit surprising.

I think we'll be running no 10 on the bench so long as West and Francis are starting together. I like the flexibility you get with those bench spots when you don't have to put a 10 on the bench.

We'll have the same flexibility with the usual lock slot on the bench once Kaino comes back. I expect us to run two backrowers off the bench quite a bit this season, with Luatua covering lock as a starter. Backrow is a strong position for us, the more we can roll out, the better.

For this game, I'm most excited about seeing that young backrow together. Not sure there'll be a quicker backrow than that fielded this season.

Moala and Ranger on the bench , that is some impact at this level.

Assuming Ranger is still the player he was.
