I last went to the dawn service 2 years ago as it was the 100th anniversary.

This time last year I was in Europe and part of that trip included visits to Flanders (Passendale/Ieper) and Normandy.

@taniwharugby we had US marines there today for the first time. They put up a US flag but didn't have anyone from the marines do a speech which was a bit odd.

Was that in Welly @jegga ?

Would have been the Marines that are posted at the Embassy. Not usually anyone senior to make a speech and they probably don't want to intrude on our ceremony. I've not seen them there in an official status before. They often just turn up in the crowd in their number twos.

I'm off to the London dawn service in the morning. Bit of a bitch as the time of year here makes it 5am and you are advised to be there at 4 as you have to get through security.
Haven't missed one in quite a few years now.
I don't have any close rellies that served in action but kind of feel it's a nice thing to add to the general feeling of thanks to those who did.
As for taking pics, I did so at the 100 in Wellington as it was truly impressive. The turnout was huge and the setting there is quite awesome when the sun starts to hit the Oz sandstone memorial. Also the Mrs was in the US so wanted her to see. She got to attend one the yanks arranged on the beach in Florida that year.

No Paraparaumu , they are over here on an exercise. I thought it was odd because there's quite a strong connection to the marines here on the coast .

I heard on the radio this morning that some protest group (Appease action??) was going to attend one of the Wellington ceremonies in regards to Hagar's book because they thought it was appropriate.

Please tell me that this didn't happen, or if it did, some Vet mowed them down on his/her NZ flag laden mobility scooter.

@Mokey was nothing in the news about it, but man that would not go down well at all. ANZAC day is one that seems to unify such a huge part of NZ that a small section to do that would end badly.

Nail head TR. It does bring 99.9% of us togther although in an unfortunate paradox the freedom our Grandfathers fought for gives people the right to be complete and utter butthurt bitches which is one of the few downsides.

Worst addition to Anzac day obviously comes from Facebook. A filter that enables you to overlay "lest we forget " some poppies and i think a soldier on your vacuous selfie profile pick.

    Fuck off

@Mokey haven't heard anything, there's been a distinct lack of Valerie Morse burning flags at the service in recent years though. I wonder if that has anything to do with the "peace activist" being photographed holding a pistol during the Urewera raids?

Yep, when the newsreader quoted some spokesperson as saying they thought it would be appropriate, I thought dude, you would be making the biggest mistake for your cause ever. Many people can take or leave Waitangi Day, but ANZAC Day brings pretty much everybody together, no matter age, race, gender whatever. it is held very dear, and it's so lovely seeing the parents and grandparents taking their kids to services, the oldies lined up with their medals, or their kids wearing them for those who have passed.

I think what's worse about that protest idea - promoting a book that falsely smears the NZDF in front of serving men and women and Vets? I mean are you fucking serious?

Anyone even contemplating any sort of protest at Anzac day is the worst kind of fluffybunny imaginable.

Rosemary McLeod said in one of her columns how deeply she regrets protesting Anzac services in the 70s with her friends . Mostly they were ranting about women who were raped during war and how they weren't being honoured. She said the worst part was the old blokes at the service never told them where to go let alone gave them a much deserved kick up the arse .
I get the impression the fuckwits that protest these sorts of things would like nothing better than some free publicity from getting a hiding and nothing would get under their skin more than a resounding "meh".

I have a long standing tradition of watching one of Saving Private Ryan or Schindlers List every Anzac Day. Nothing to do with NZ in the war obviously but given they are the two greatest war movies ever made I always find them poignant.

As I alluded to in my other post. All those 70s bra burning bitches should be first in line to actually celebrate that the ANZACs fought for their right to carry on like that I the first place. Some cultures would shoot them on the fucken spot.

Apparently there were some anti war protesters out, not sure if they were being obnoxious or not but the young fellow seems pretty worked up about them

They are protesting against war on a day we honour those who sacrificed to keep our freedom; of course they're being obnoxious
