@Stockcar86 Adblocking. The iOS native adblockers don't work in Chrome, IIRC?

Can I join in and ask a question too please?

I want to get some sort of tablet, but for two main reasons only - to read on and to watch stuff when travelling on a plane.

I don't need the most high tech, or the most expensive (in fact I'm leaning against that because I'm not a tablet person around the house kind of guy).

    Any suggestions?

As an android/ pc guy I'd say the ipads and minis are very good. If you want a tablet with expandable memory then the Samsung galaxy tab is better. I go for minis or 8" androids, a little small but easy for the kids to use

No kids for me to worry about!

I'm probably wanting closer to 10" as I'll be watching stuff on it, but then not too big because I want to be able to read it as well. 😉

The wife has a big iPad. The display is very sharp

One of the Pros? I find them to be comically large (and I'm too cheap/unwilling to pay over $1k for a tablet).

I guess I should have said tablets less than $500.00 🙂

This is what I've got 200 of the store owners from work using:

    https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/TABSAM5800/Samsung-Galaxy-TAB-A-101-WiFi-Tablet--White---16GB

Decent price point if you just need WiFi and not a SIM card for your connectivity. Big enough to read ebooks from (same size as iPad mini)

@Nepia if you can, have a look at the Lenovo Yoga Tablet - I have the cheap one (< $300 oz) and it does the job for Netflix etc.

The "Plus version" is a 50% price hike but pretty well spec'd

(On a side note: if anyone is after a value-for-money Android phone the new Nokia 6 Black is AUD$399 and carries some impressive specs).

@Nepia I have an Amazon fire for throwing in my bag on short trips to watch and read on. Does the trick, though maybe a bit small for what you want? Cheap and cheerful though.

Yeah pretty sure they are only safari extensions. In a choice between a few ads and being forced to use safari - I pick ads

You aren't interested in the new reasonably sized pro?

Cool, thanks for the tips guys.

@Bones They seem cheap, do they have video capability? Also, are you restricted to Kindle or can other E-reading software be added?

@NTA Are those the ones with the cirlce edge on one side?

@Stargazer I've been looking at those ones at JB Hifi and at that price point they're similar to an iPad?

We have one if those too. I find the browsing is a little clunky compared to the iPad

Adblocker: I have been using Adblock Plus for ages now. It's very effective. If there is a downside, then maybe that it slows down loading pages a little bit, but that may be the case with every adblocker.
It's available for iOS, Android, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge and Safari.

@Duluth I'd either go for a reasonably priced tablet (US$330 iPad), or something like a Surface Pro that can replace my laptop too (I use a desktop 90% of the time for work, but read a lot of articles and webpages on the tablet).

Samsung Galaxy S is nearly twice the iPad's price, as is the iPad Pro. If there was a new, iPad priced Nexus tablet I would jump on it.

    Similar to my usage.

I did get the new pro, kind of hard to justify the price and insane specs given the (current) software limitations. I'm using the ios beta and it's a big improvement but still nowhere near a laptop replacement.
In terms of pure tablet hardware nothing comes close

@Duluth Yeah, the 10nm node chipset is amazing. The display specs look really great too.

iOS 11 has a file manager?

Yes, still fairly basic but its good that apple is almost treating its users like adults

You can manage you own files and it links with other services (icloud on the beta but they are adding dropbox and similar services)
Apps will be able to reference the file system in future.. that plus the better multi-tasking makes it more like a real os

@Duluth Does it have SMB support? I often stream music from my desktop to my tablet.

    @Tim

Nope. Maybe that comes later. Will they trust their users with that awesome responsibility?

Of course the apple answer would be to install that pos itunes and apple music etc etc (there's 3rd party app workarounds too)

The software limitations are still infuriating

Have you considered weight and balance in your purchase? How comfortable will it be for one hand browsing?🍆 💦

@Nepia they're a "restricted" version of android but using the Amazon appstore. So you get Netflix, Amazon video, I've got Plex on it too. Can't get the download for Netflix to work properly though but mainly because I've been too lazy to try and fix it.

I'll check out other e-readers and let you know.

That's why the mini is best 😉
