    @Tim

    Adblocker: I have been using Adblock Plus for ages now. It's very effective. If there is a downside, then maybe that it slows down loading pages a little bit, but that may be the case with every adblocker.
    It's available for iOS, Android, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge and Safari.

    @Duluth I'd either go for a reasonably priced tablet (US$330 iPad), or something like a Surface Pro that can replace my laptop too (I use a desktop 90% of the time for work, but read a lot of articles and webpages on the tablet).

    Samsung Galaxy S is nearly twice the iPad's price, as is the iPad Pro. If there was a new, iPad priced Nexus tablet I would jump on it.

    Similar to my usage.

    I did get the new pro, kind of hard to justify the price and insane specs given the (current) software limitations. I'm using the ios beta and it's a big improvement but still nowhere near a laptop replacement.
    In terms of pure tablet hardware nothing comes close

    @Duluth Yeah, the 10nm node chipset is amazing. The display specs look really great too.

    iOS 11 has a file manager?

    Yes, still fairly basic but its good that apple is almost treating its users like adults

    You can manage you own files and it links with other services (icloud on the beta but they are adding dropbox and similar services)
    Apps will be able to reference the file system in future.. that plus the better multi-tasking makes it more like a real os

    @Duluth Does it have SMB support? I often stream music from my desktop to my tablet.

    @Tim

    Nope. Maybe that comes later. Will they trust their users with that awesome responsibility?

    Of course the apple answer would be to install that pos itunes and apple music etc etc (there's 3rd party app workarounds too)

    The software limitations are still infuriating

    Have you considered weight and balance in your purchase? How comfortable will it be for one hand browsing?🍆 💦

    @Nepia they're a "restricted" version of android but using the Amazon appstore. So you get Netflix, Amazon video, I've got Plex on it too. Can't get the download for Netflix to work properly though but mainly because I've been too lazy to try and fix it.

    I'll check out other e-readers and let you know.

    @NTA I'm wondering if that stand part will be annoying to hold when I'm using it as an e-reader?

    @Nepia looks like you can sideload apps on the Fire, can't get other e-readers on the amazon app-store though apparently. Should be pretty easy to go to the Amazon Appstore and see if the apps you might want are in there.

    I just use a mini ipad. Great size for both reading and watching stuff.
    Most of the 'issues' people are talking about are because, as you know, apple stuff works best in an apple environment. It seems to be that trying to mix it in causes frustration because you are trying to get it to do something it was designed to do very well a certain way but not the way you are trying to integrate it.
    eg want to watch/listen to something stored on your computer? Home sharing deals with that, streams over your network from one device to another. Want to access your passwords? Sure keychain does that and links via iCloud.
    I guess all you need to think about @Nepia is how you are looking to get your media. With an ipad f you want hard copies on your tablet be prepared to pay extra for capacity and also have to either download directly (and pay) via itunes on the device or convert downloaded stuff on your computer and transfer it via an itunes sync. For Amazon/Netflix/iPlayer etc you will have no trouble streaming or downloading directly. VPNs also work fine
    If you use an iMac at home I would definitely go with an iPad. You could even look at a second hand one to save a few bucks.

    @Bones @Nepia yes the stand folds into the back of it, so in fact it has a nice rounded edge to hold onto while @dK is peeling the kumara.

    I was more meaning the rounded bit - my OCD might not be able to cope with holding one side on the rounded bit and the other side on the flat.

    I think I've ruled out the Fire due to screen size - it appears 7" is the largest screen available in Oz.

    Nope. I accept the limits are by design but the software limits are a valid complaint even in an all apple environment
