Anyone else have issues with this?

It's basically strong negative reactions to particular trigger sounds. For me its loud slurping/chewing or crunching noises. I get surprisingly agitated and sometimes even need to go for a walk just to calm down.

    Misophonia - Wikipedia

It's become worse in that I've had 2 years with my own office to now being part of a team in an open office.

To my left I have a guy whose jaw makes a loud clicking sound when he eats, naturally he eats a minimum of 2 apples a day and it sounds like he is chewing on marbles. He also cracks his knuckles slowly about 4 times a day.

To my right I have a guy who eats with his mouth open with very loud chewing noises, naturally he eats a minimum of 2 bananas a day and has a 2kg bag of almonds in between his frequent meals.

Combined I have a very small window where I can concentrate and get real work done. I've had a bit of success listening to classical music on earphones really loud to drown out the sounds but this does cause issues when the manager is calling out to me.

Anyway would be interested to see if anyone else has this issue and any other potential coping mechanisms. Both colleagues are great guys but for large portions of the day I have an unjustified urge to punch them in the face...which isn't ideal in a team environment.

Forced laughter on the radio. Hatiest!! (Ben and Jonno are the worst at it)

Matt and Jerry are starting to do it more frequently and it completely puts me off the show when it is being forced.

@Rembrandt People eating noisily irritates the piss out of me, particularly when I'm trying to concentrate, but certainly not to the extent it does for you.

Apparently, I bounce my leg when sitting. I don't know why.

I do that too and it usually annoys someone.

one of my best mates does that. I would overlook it if he didn't insist on having his foot touch the table. Stop jiggling the table you bastard!

Didn't realise this had a name but clicking noises like drive me nuts, j thought it had something to do with me wearing earmuffs most of the day.

My coping mechanism is yelling at my son to stop clicking that bloody pen .

Me and my bro do that one too.

Only thing I can think of that comes close is anytime I hear a noise like that 'click' old school clock radios used to make before the alarm would come on. Whenever I hear a similar sound I get instantly agitated/edgy. I very rarely use an alarm to wake up.

I'd love to hear a decent theory as to why such innocuous sounds create such a strong emotional response. I can't really think of any evolutionary advantage.

@Rembrandt cos they just piss you off!

Loud eating is annoying, especially as in most cases, it is easily solved by shutting your mouth! 📢 🤐

One of my good friends always made 'mmm, mmmmm, mmm' sounds when he ate, was more amusing than annoying, as you can imagine, he was always made fun of, as only good mates can do.

Add me to the bounce my leg thing.

When I visit NZ I have this weird love hate relationship with NZ radio. It so refreshing to have Djs that talk and swear like normal people.

But the breakfast shows and drivetime show with their antics pranks and wind up calls are the worst. Add in the forced laughter and I can't take it.

I still can't understand why station bosses think radio shows need three presenters trying to outperform each other with lame attempts at humour. It's like having a drink in a pub next to a bunch of moronic teenagers on their first outing without mum.

(caveat to that: it can be a formula that works well with something like sport. Some of the best radio I ever heard was the period when Gibbit, Smithy and Doull were together.)

@mooshld I don't know if you read Stuart MacBrides books but he always manages to slip in bits portraying radio presenters as moronic idiots treating their listeners as simpletons. Gets the UK radio DJ mannerisms down pat.

The trouble is with that sort of thing is that as soon as such a thing becomes successful the execs decide this is the way forward and every other fucking show is a rip off. Add to that the fact that usually even the original runs out of steam and becomes a parody of itself.

Yeah, it was a near perfect blend of professionalism (knowing when to keep quiet and when to chip in) and subject knowledge. Never treated the audience as stupid.

They didn't start the formula they just showed the way it could work well.

@Crucial That's a rarity alright. Did they go out on a high or die id taper off into obscurity?

I don't know whether this is a genetic thing or it is learned behaviour but I just can't stand the noise that Chris Evans makes. I'm told a lot of people suffer with this ailment.

The station pulled the plug and reorganised. It was never a high rating show as it was a morning sports show on a racing station.
At one point The Fern even had a weekly contribution with either Bart or Redbeard as guest.

There were various host combinations but the one mentioned above was the best IMO.
