At the end of a day it will come down to results. A shocker of a performance at RWC 2019 and Foster might be on the outer. On the other hand it would be hard to argue if it's 3-peat time.

I am trying to think back to his cheifs days and the comments on here. People were whinging about weird team selections, dumb game plans, an underachieving team... What else have I missed?

Their attack was always good , at times excellent ,

That the Chiefs were a thinly disguised recruitment tool for the Waikato RU, rather than a genuine attempt at producing a good team.

While in part true, this doesn't explain the odd selections and the dumb game plans.
Foster teams were excellently drilled. But were always flakey. They'd get up for big games and then crumble to poor teams. They'd make the final, only to crash and burn.
I really, really don't want him in charge, and I'm a Waikato boy.

It was only a few years ago under Henry that many were asking, "what the hell does Hansen do?" Or better known as FGH.... He was criticised as being out of his depth and of no value.
Coaches, like players can change, develop, reinvent themselves. Foster is in a good environment and doing well in helping an AB backline and attack redefine themselves.
As for the Smith comments, it's hard to say if he's just pumping the tyres of a mate or a deflection for himself to stave off questions about him returning to the top spot.

Hansen didn't exactly have a glittering career prior to the ABs and he worked out pretty well!
If Foster is indeed the next AB coach it's also important what coaches he will have around him.
Tbf he did OK with Wales and at least had experience as an international head coach, including at a RWC. I'd be far more comfortable with Foster if he went out and coached a test team first.

@KiwiMurph yep that's the key...a great leader is really only a measure of the people they surround themselves with.
While I don't think he 'promotion' should be automatic, it is hard to argue (if we keep getting the results) that he doesn't have the inside running.

And Smith said in one of the early interviews 'people who judge him based on Waikato rule out the potential for people to keep improving'. Can't see Hansen and Smith tolerating him if he was crap. Got to give them the benefit of the doubt - they have earned it with their results.
also, I just threw up in my mouth a bit again. All the logic in the world, but Foster just doesn't inspire me as a head coach.

Much like some strange (at the time) selections over the last few year i think the current coaches have well and truely built up enough credit to be trusted. If Foster is good enough that they are happy to work with him and endorse him to take over then that is all i need to hear.
IMO his chiefs record is now irrelevant.What i 100% don't want is a new coach to come in and start changing thing. By the time the next RWC comes around there will have been 15 years worth of continuous work going in to make the ABs what they are. It would be a massive backward step bringing in an outsider to take over. Just like you don't bring in a new player to be captain.
If there is another candidate they need to come in now to replace Smith.

fozzie needs to fuck off and actually coach a team successfully before he should be considered for the top gig. he did dumb shit at the chiefs. maybe he's learned all his lessons and is a great coach now, but how about we check whether that is true first.
right now he's an assistant coach, in a successful team. which is a different job. not to mention that that team was just as successful before he joined it.as for the other coaches being trusted on the decision - fuck that. it's not objective in the slightest, which is asking for trouble. i've been a hansen supporter since back when others were doubting his worth as an assistant, i think he's a hell of a smart bloke - but there is no way his recommendation should be enough.
