@canefan I have been a fan of Neil Finn since day one and him hating Something So Strong is a new one on me. I have lost count of the number of his concerts that I have been to and more often than not that song was played. The band hated the video though, they thought it looked more like a tooth paste ad.

I can't provide evidence but seem to remember reading it. I was in the front row at the Dunedin town hall and when we asked them to play it Neil looked like we'd kicked his cat. They are still my favourite my kiwi band by far, they opened for REM at Western Springs in the early 90s and stole the show. If they play a tour in NZ again I'll be there

I expect I won't hear it on Saturday when he plays with Liam in Oxford, but that's OK.

The cultural cringe is strong on the Fern. Is there any Kiwi musician that the majority don't hate?

That sounds pretty cool , post a review.

I'm flying down from Wellington for it, so my bias as a massive Neil Finn fan and Liam Finn fan is now laid bare for all to see.

I was weighing up the Paekakariki show on Wednesday but it sold out very quickly - this show had too, but my friend already had sorted tickets so that worked out nicely.

I went to the same concert, and that was my one and only U2 concert. I would have liked to hear some of my favourites (e.g., The Unforgettable Fire) but most of the hits were played including “One Tree Hill”.

The worst part of that concert was having Jay-Z as the opener. Talk about a mismatch.

I remember hearing he was opening for them , thought it was weird. Two very different types of music.

Didn't Kanye West open for them on a previous tour? Weird

I think in many places Kanye West opening for them is fine - in Auckland not so much. I went to one of the concerts at Mt Smart and thought Kanye was great (not knowing much of his music going in) but most of the crowd around me were going obnoxiously out of their way to show how much they didn't like him (and I bet most of them, like me hadn't really heard much of their stuff).

I can't actually remember what U2 was like but then I wasn't a huge fan, just went along as everyone else was going.

I went to mountain rock mostly to see Dragon live because I thought it might be the last time they played together with both brothers. Got stuck next to some fuckwit who was giving them the bird with both hands while chanting “ Aussie piston wristed gibbons” , Ffs .
They were great once I moved away from him though .

@smudge I hope they make it up to Brisbane so I can see them. Liam and Elroy are talented and it should be bloody entertaining watching them with their old man.

I thought Jay-Z was quite good compared to Kanye, who by comparison seemed to phone his performance in. Following Kanye as their support act in the Oz and NZ legs of that tour, U2 went on to have a very different support act in Hawaii, Pearl Jam...

I don’t hate the exponents , the first two I would be happy to never hear again.
Also Fat Freddy’s drop type music , that’s more from it being thrashed every summer this century than any actual dislike of the music itself.

I think the Cranberries music has lasted pretty well, I played the CD's a year or so ago and still enjoyed them - even if they were too radio friendly for some of the 'in-crowd' and reviewers back in the day. 🙂

When I heard the news about O'Riordan this morning it reminded me of a pre-social media rumour about her demise in 1996, sadly this one was real...

@jegga Crowded House hated Something so Strong and barely played it. IMHO these so called hated songs made these guys millions of dollars from fans who love them and they should just suck it up and play the farking songs

Yep , there’ll come a time when no one gives a fuck about them and they’ll be happy to have an audience . They won’t be so picky then I bet.

I noticed Crowded House were perfectly happy to play it during the reunion concert at the Sydney Opera house last year. Sanctimony left when the money and fame dried up perhaps

Did the money really dry up for Finn? I assume he's doing alright.

I'm going to see him and his boy in a couple of weeks in a park up here. Should be good.

I despise them due to hearing Why does love do this to me about 500,000 times by various drunken pissheads.

For some reason Dragon and The Dudes have held up way better.

I hate NZ reggae with a passion.

Funny how that works, I wonder if it’s different today because I find most of my new music on YouTube and don’t listen to the likes of ZM . The cranberries along with garbage just got thrashed on the radio at the time , a few years go by and the hype dies down and you kind of rediscover them again.
Felt the same way about the Killers when they were huge , my mrs chucked some of their cds into my phone and we are going to see them soon . Will be gutted if they don’t play Read my mind.

i was about to like this when i realised, i was by the pool having a stubbie the other day, listening to a reggae play list, and it had a lot of NZ stuff on it, and you know what, it worked. I find a lot of music has it's place.

Hell, i even enjoy a bit of Jack Johnson while having a lazy afternoon stubbie in the sun.

I fucking hate "Zombie", and can't say i particularly like any Cranberries stuff, but 46 is too young for anyone to die.

Yeah that's a pretty good tune. The stuff I hate is the really slow dub type shit where there's about 20 band members on stage, half of them playing trumpets.

@mariner4life be prepared to not know a lot of the songs. They have an album coming out and seem to be playing songs from the album with a handful of older ones thrown in. Keep an eye out for Elroy. Neil reckons he is the best drummer and guitarist in the family.

yea, i am sort of prepared for that, it's not a Crowded House tour. But, the location is really nice, hopefully the weather is good, i'll sit in a landscaped park listening to a couple of talented musicians, and have a couple of beers.
