Both are the twin pillars of 80’s movie fucking awesomeness.
Assuming I’m right ( I’m sure I am)
Which movie would cap off the perfect 80’s Arnie trilogy, Terminator?, one of the Conan’s?Twins?

Which movie would cap off the perfect 80’s Arnie trilogy, Terminator?, one of the Conan’s?wow. I absolutely love Conan the Barbarian. Love it.
True Lies is 90s, but a fucking awesome Arnie movie. Red Heat? Terminator? Terminator 2? The Running Man? Total Recall? How the fuck do you choose out of those?
All varying degrees of awesome but Terminator is still head and shoulders above.

That made me laugh.
Did Arnie's Kindergarten Cop and Stallones Don't shoot Mama(?) come out around that time too?

Anyone seen Eraser? That must be mid90s. I haven't seen it but iirc he shoots a crocodile in the head.

Yep. Oh christ the Stallone "comedies" were bad. Oscar! My God.
Tango and Cash was OK but that was action/comedy.

novelty deaths and post-death one-liners galore. I'm getting a chub just thinking about it
As long as you wait a few years before perving at Alyssa Milano I agree 100%
It was ok to perve at her at the time because she was a year or so older than me.
Commando over Predator.
Re: Beevor - what a pissy article. It shouldn't have been titled "great war movies", it should have been "great war movies, but only if they're as factual as a documentary like the French would make, but Brit films from the 50s and 60s are ok because because, but definitely not any American movies because uncouth Hollywood can't make a decent war movie".
He writes good easy readying history books (I don't always agree with his conclusions) but he's extremely pompous to listen to (I just listened to a podcast where he was talking about his book on Arnhem, interesting stories, worst plum in the mouth delivery ever) and clearly he's no fun at the movies.
-
Actually if you want to see "peak Arnie" I reckon Twins is the film to watch. Everything that made him the larger than life film star is in that film. He's just perfect. My kids were enraptured with him after watching that.

What conclusions don't you agree with?
What I kind of find a bit Meh is that this expert at war hasn't ever seen war at first hand. Not saying he doesn't have a right to critique films I'm just not sure if he's the guy to go to when determining authenticity.

I thought he was commenting on historical accuracy, like the fact that the US didn't singlehandedly win the war?

Re: Beevor - I've read a lot of primary sources on Crete (due to my MA topic) and I don't think that the force on Crete was ever equipped to deal with the invasion force. Losing Maleme due to the fog of war put it beyond doubt, but the fighting readiness of the disparate units was all over the spectrum. He puts a bit more emphasis onto Ultra than I think is necessary - all Ultra really did was let the Commonwealth know the invasion was coming (which they knew anyway) and that it would be air and sea borne - which they planned for anyway. But, I think Crete is a great book, and if it's the only one people read on that battle then that's all good.

All the British films I grew up watching (those black and white ones from the 50s and 60s) had them winning the war as well.

There was some 80s romantic comedy type movie that she got her boobies out in - I think I ruined that copy before returning to United Video.

What's ironic? I haven't called anyone a racist or mysogenist yet.
Don't know enough about Crete but your conclusion seems sound. Many veterans would probably argue that they would have won if.....
Often they were probably seeing things at a local level without being aware of the full situation. It's a great book, but I think there is far more meat in Stalingrad and Berlin. Probably because those were much bigger battles. -
