@dogmeat they were discussing it on RS the other night and they mentioned the Black Power did one for Muldoon at his funeral...which would seem odd for me?

I still like it but I do think it has become over-choreographed and a "performance". Chief here is the long wind in before the actual haka commences.
School hakas are the best.
Most moving I've seen were at a funeral for a guy at work who topped himself and by a family seeing their son off overseas at Chch airport. Both were totally spontaneous consisted of only a few participants and could not be beat for raw emotion.
I have performed two overseas - one at my wedding in UK which was a bit shambolic and a solo one at a conference in Bangkok which I really did throw myself into heart and soul and which got a standing ovation. Fuck my chest hurt the next way.
At least you didn't do a humiliator on British Morning Television like @WillieTheWaiter not too dissimilar to the video above.

@taniwharugby Muldoon and Black Power became quite chummy. He may have been many things but Piggy was no coward and enjoyed confrontation which the gang leaders seemed to respect. He also seemed to respect them as tough buggers which given how craven his cabinet was probably endeared them to him. He set up work programmes and accommodation to assist BP

In a Northland wide under 13 rugby tournament in the school holidays, all the teams had one, most did them at some point.
But the best one by far was when one of the teams did one after thier opening game for one of the boys in their team whose dad had died 3 days earlier (he played and had a blinder)...the emotion these boys did it with was something to behold, a number walked off after in tears themselves...I'm getting teary thinking about it as the boy and his brother it was done for are from my team and have coached them for 5 years.
I did. Some hot chick said I had a big gut. This was at my absolute peak 'drink heaps, eat shit and do no exercise' period of my life and I was clocking in at about 110kg. It was great inspiration to take more care of myself on my return to NZ.
I also had a horrific goatee.

I missed the haka in 1994 after getting lost trying to find Eden Park - we lost to the 'try from the end of the earth' , then in 1999 at Twickenham v France I only made it in time to see the last part of the haka. I try really hard not to miss the haka now.

over-produced, over choreographed, led by a fucking halfback. I said it during the French series, but i am proper over it. I also hate how we have two, and we wheel out one for "big" games (as decided by us).

Personally I agree that they’d be better off only performing it at home. I’d also prefer a little less choreographed lead-in too. Having said that, I’d hate to see it chopped completely, because it’s so well-known beyond rugby. I can’t remember how many times I’ve had someone say ‘All Blacks Haka’ to me when I’ve been traveling - all over Asia, Europe, and North America. For that alone - meaning the ‘brand’ value of the ABs that draws in AIG etc, we should keep it.

I still like it.
But I usually watch my test matches these days a little delayed after the tots are in bed and I fast forward through it.
When I do watch them, I don't like the 'look at moi' theatrics by the TJP-esque haka leaders. E.g the long-winded leadup.
But, I certainly like it when at the actual stadium.
I don't think its being overdone from an AB perspective. They do it once per match. 14 times or so a year or whatever. Other codes and Sevens victory hakas and fricking swimmers bronze medal classless medal ceremony ambushes etc are the guilty party if talking 'over done'.
When they went on those 3 month tours of yesteryear they did it twice a week ....
Wouldn't be bothered if it wasn't done overseas or in some venues if not welcome. The fact it has IRB protocols around it is a bit silly, that it needs them, to stop the 'outrage'.

I'll always have a soft spot for the Buck Shelford era haka. It was the first version I can remember that had genuine menace.
Remember this? Still fairly tame from all those white boys compared to today's version. Buck and McDowall are the only players showing any menace.

Traditionally haka was only performed overseas
Pretty sure the first haka at home was against Italy at RWC 87
I had to look that up as I thought I could remember as a wee nipper watching the Haka live. You are right about 1987 but I couldn't see against who. It just said Buck and Hika Reid were instrumental in getting it performed at home
