@nepia the preamble while waffling sets up the series well imho, it gets better and better after that
Maybe part of why I found it less interesting was the Nirvana focus as I'm not a big Nirvana fan. I just clicked at the end of part 3 that the series was written 8 years ago.
Yeah I was never really a fan either , I’ve worked with a few guys who were born around the time the article starts off and when you get talking about music and concerts you’ve been to they start frothing about Cobain and asking what it was like to be around when Nevermind came out. I can remember the first time I heard it and I didn’t hate it but there were other bands around like Soundgarden that I thought were a lot better.
He nails Pearl Jam though , Vitology is self indulgent crap on a par with Pink Floyd’s the final cut, I completely lost interest in them after that.to be fair he nails most of them (if a little forgiving of Nirvana, but he obviously loves them, so i am cool with it). I found myself nodding away, especially from about 7 on. I can see why i got in to dance music in the late 90s.
Agree, less interest in the later groups makes those articles pretty boring.

It reminded me of that James Hatfield quote “ if a band has a k where a c should be they are probably shit”.

He seems as awesome a bloke as Lars Urlich seems a dick. I guess they balance eachother well.

I saw the RHCP at a BDO in Glasgow, they didnt come on until about 9pm, played for maybe 90 mins, went off, came back on did an Encore, but wasnt that great, plus by then I was so over it haha.
Earlier in the day was Electric Six, PJ Harvey, Queens of the Stone Age and Foos.
Queens of the Stone Age were best.
-
@rocky-rockbottom I still listen to Melvins a bit. By christ they have released some albums over the years. I just checked their discography on wiki and it's fucking long!
-
@Rocky-Rockbottom Mr Bungle ftw!! Patton really pissed Kiedis off for being so fucking awesome.
My entry point for the Chilis was BSSM and Mothers Milk. Huge fan of Uplift Mofo although I farking hate 'behind the sun'.
I've seen them several times. The BSSM gig was epic as I was just a turd former whose dad let him sneak into the mosh pit (supported by HLAH - wow, naked dudes rocking out!!). That gig is etched in my memory. Since then I saw them once more for a tour in Wellington and 2-3(?) times at BDO. Not being a muso I probably had lower expectations as I enjoyed all the gigs, possibly due to my state of inebriation or ... ummm other things.

I enjoy watching the Foos, simply because they always look like they're really enjoying it.

have been revisiting all of my high school - varsity era bands, many are still classics and saw this band in Christchurch in 1982
What do you remember of the Chch gig @Nevorian ?
The Auck gig on that tour was funny. They were on a Sandinista tour promoting the triple dub monstrosity and the crowd, having waited years to see them, weren’t impressed. After about 10minutes the chant of “old stuff, old stuff” filled the Logan Concrete Centre and eventually Strummer stopped, ripped up the set list and said “hope we still know how to play this” and ripped into Tommy Gun followed by White Riot and a great show.

I saw Pearl Jam at the super top, their support act was Dead Flowers who got half way through their first song before the promoter yanked them and wouldn’t let them play again due to safety concerns. Man that must have sucked for those guys.
Geez, so many kiwi bands are completely forgotten until they get randomly mentioned. Wonder what those blokes are doing now?

Probably chilling with Nine Livez

As a semi pro muso I'm proud of what I achieved as a working bass player

The chili's have gotten more stale as they have gotten older. The thing is though, gigs are very much so a personal experience - what one person says sucks balls, another thinks was the best gig ever. I think it was V Fesitval 2001 when they were well and truly off their peak, I still rmember them playing Fire and totally blowing my mind. They left the stage at peak peak energy, was fucking awesome.
I think it was 95 I saw Faith No More at Logan Campbell, I'd still put it up there as one of the best gigs I've been to. Ask most other they'll tell you it sucked balls. The version of King For A Day they played then had incredible energy.
For energy though, pretty hard to top almost every Shihad gig.

I've seen a shitload of FNM live stuff on YouTube and I think it's fair to say he ( Mike Patton ) improvises a bit more than I'd like ideally. Definitely better in the studio.

Faith no more live at Brixton was a favourite of mine for a long time. I saw them live at the old town hall and they were really good I thought.
The keyboard player had a brief relationship with Courtney Love which apparently turned him into a homosexual.

FNM are a strange one, as the more you follow them, the more you realise that Bottum & Gould are the soul of the band. Not often you'd say the keyboardist and bass are the soul of a rock band.

Yep. I think him and Rob Halford are the only openly gay hard rock stars out there ?
Awesome performance of we care a lot, how good is this ?
Their guitarist Jim Martin quit to go and grow massive award winning pumpkins.
As you do.

Gould is probably the most underrated bassist in history. Some really good lines and chops.
Patton makes FNM though.
