i have had to step outside a couple of times. It's that fucking hot, that all you want is super super cold beer

Absolutely.
Quick roadie story. Did this earlier in the year during a stinking hot day and purchased a single big bot of Waikato. Got caught in roadworks at a passing lane so we were two wide and kind of forgot about the drinking thing and took a swig. I was right next to a plain cop. He beeped and got me to wind down the window and asked what the hell I was doing.
I told him it was only a roadie and he politely asked me to stop drinking it in a 'traffic jam' to which I obliged.Once I was going through Tirau he did pull me over to breath test me which I obviously passed.
Mentioned I should be a bit more subtle with the roadie.

I imagine it will be the same here soon. You can't have a open beer in a vehicle in a no alcohol zone. So if I had driven through one of those zones, I could have been arrested.

I have a 40 minute drive each way. Sometimes on a Friday after a hard week, the drive deserves a beer.
Nothing wrong with it unless people think nothing should be drunk in a car (Coffee, soda etc)

It's not a patch on Lakeman, Panhead or Garage Project in my opinion but I am a typical massive Wellington beer piston wristed gibbon....I might even grow the beard to reinforce my point.

They may not let you into their ironically converted corner shop with a carefully selected fridge of obscure brews made out of waste and hedgerow clippings. You need to cultivate this look if you want in (and want to look like every second plonker in E1)
