@raznomore I think it is wrong the way she has said it.
Saying we are sorry this happened in NZ would have been ok, but reall,y all she needed to do was offer our sympathies and condolences, but an apology made in that way implies NZ as a country has done something wrong and this is what she is apologising for.
I have nothing to be sorry about, so why was the PM apologising on my behalf?
I think you’re onto it TR. It’s worrying that she doesn’t understand the difference between embarrassment that this happened in the country she leads and responsibility for it. To make us all vicariously responsible is a stretch too far.

A mate of mine actually knows the guy and said he's crazy. Same mates female friend went out with him in October and ended up fearing for her safety following an incident. Cops were notified at the time.
Yeah used to live down this end of the country too , apparently he was doing quite well up until a few years ago . Looks like he might have developed a mental health issue .

Attention overseas media, only Selina Ardern gets to exploit this tragedy for gain
-
For all those criticising Ardern, I must say I'd normally be with you.
But what she has said has gone down very well over here. Very well. Some media folks have really praised her and a couple of my colleagues were saying how much they thought of what she had said.
NZ does have a multi billion dollar tourism industry, and part of Ardern's job is to protect that. Which in my view is something she has made a good effort of doing.

I don"t think knowing that if a nutter murders you that the pm will tear up and apologise on tv will do much either way for our tourism industry. I'm sure some media folks have praised most of them don"t seem to be able to do much else.
To me it just reeks of the sort of cheap political cynicism you'd expect from someone who got their grounding in politics working in the Blair administration .

You seriously think NZ's tourism industry was threatened by this?
-
This "good for tourism and business" angle doesn't really wash with me
It suggests that by not grovelling to the world, tourism would (might) drop.
Bollocks.Nobody even thought twice about NZ being dangerous until this fucken bint starting spouting shit that apparently we fell asleep on watch.
People wealthy enough to holiday in NZ understand a nations responsibility for a lone nutter in their population, and anyone who doesn't wasn't coming here anyway, because stupid are often poor.
Adern's message may have been appropriate in private to the grieving parents, in fact it should have been just that, but oh no, a woke opportunity presented itself...

Depends on how you define threatened. It certainly wasn't enhanced.

I may be wrong but I'd imagine the people keen to holiday in NZ have to stump up 3-5 grand at minimum. That's pretty much top 10%
Thats cool, happy to agree to disagree. Normally I'd be in 100% agreeance with you, but the reaction I've faced here has been pretty positive, so this time I'm off a differing view.

@MajorRage even if the tourism angle is relevant, which I really don't think it is, she has undermined the courts and potentially compromised the case which often leads to a reduced sentence. She is Prime Minster and should know better than to put her opinion forward on an ongoing investigation. But she just couldn't pass up an opportunity which @jegga aludes to.
-
@majorrage the Nz press have given her a very long honeymoon particularly after she managed to soil the gene pool .
Which land mass do you live on? What would the press there do if it was discovered that the government held youth camps that regularly resulted in convictions for sex offences?
Our press here did fuck all. -
She could have expressed her sadness at the act and reiterated how safe NZ is on the whole for tourists and left it at that.
But making us all shamed and responsible for one man's actions is bloody ridiculous. Ditto for implying the welcome of the whole country is tarnished by this act. Millions of people come here every year and have the best time, and will continue to do so. Because it is relatively safe. But as in every country, there will always be sick fucks who do terrible things. And the rest of us sure as hell aren't responsible or at fault for that.

I think the definition of threaten is pretty obvious. I also think it's pretty obvious that the NZ tourism industry didn't need the PM's intervention. How far should this be taken btw? Should the PM also apologise on behalf of NZ nationals who commit murder overseas?
If the spotlight should be on anything it should be about hooking up with random people on Tinder. That's always a potential risk regardless of what country you're in.

No way am I touching a question around British press and potential cover-ups!!!

Ok , I bet Teresa May isn’t regularly on the cover of women’s magazines in designer clothes , her teeth photoshopped to something approaching human size . It’s bizarre, the only good thing about it is it won’t last and when the press do turn on her it will likely be brutal .

In principle, I don't disagree with you (for once). However, Im simply stating what the reaction here is that I've seen. Bones, Cato, Crucial etc may disagree with me from what they have seen, I'm just giving one mans perspective - mine.
Ardern has no vested interest in Tinder (as far as I know ... ) so not quite the same.

Well a big bunch of you seem to hate what the PM said. But I can tell you over here in France , its making news and its been really well received. It was a 1 minute clip for gods sake.
I don't know what the issue with what she said is. She said we pride ourselves on our hospitality. Which we do or we did when I lived there. She said the government will support the police in anything they need to close the case. And she said she should have been safe here and she wasn't.
I share some of her sentiment, Is it the use of the word shame? I feel embarrassed or ashamed it happened in New Zealand. I tell loads of people to go visit, you'll love it. There is a big difference between that and feeling responsible!
Whether its reality or not, people internationally perceive NZ as being a very safe place. If this had happened in Mexico I highly doubt it would have got the same level of attention.
She didn't say its all white dudes fault, she didn't say its the fault of all kiwis. She apologised to a parent that their child won't be coming home. Seems like a really human thing to do and really the least she can do under the circumstances.
Imagine it flipped a young kiwi backpacker dies in Paris. She's pretty and white so the media give a shit about it and ask the French president to comment. How would you feel if he said "Well the police are looking into that, nothing to do with me" That would be pretty cold.
You may not like the PM, I am hardly a super fan myself, but to get your panties in a bunch because she apologised to a grieving family, that the media were bound to ask about, that's what is triggering you? Really.
