Now, I am aware of what I said regarding The Apology but today my feeling on the "Grieving NZers" and "Your pain is our shame" is one of, well, embarrassment.
The level of outrage and number of people publicly grieving for an outsider is frankly almost vomit inducing. Not because this poor girl is not worth it. But because our own people are too.The next time a native baby is killed or a native woman is raped I 100% know this public spectacle and vigil will not fucken happen.
And NZ media you need to just stop fucken now with this "shame" & "grieving" bullshit.

Cynical question: do these vigils happen if we remove social media? Would so many be attending if they couldn't narcissistically post about it online?
Any of you old buggers remember anything like this happening before? The reaction seems way OTT given we never get vigils for, say, the innocent children that are regularly killed in domestic violence incidents.
(Edited but probably too late for anyone to take this post seriously now)

Nope . I don’t remember there being grief olympics held before social media .

Some parts of the outpouring around Princess Diana's death are the closest I can think of pre-social media.

Good call , that was utterly bizarre.

Missed any previous version so I'll take you seriously, and quote you so others can read your edited post.
Short answer no, I can't remember anything like this in NZ.
I think there is a fair amount of "people in other countries will blame us, and by association me, ME!, beacuse New Zealand, and therefore I must show that I personally am not to blame to ensure that people on the other side of the world don't think badly of ME!".
Much like the Jill Meagher hysteria in Melbourne a few years ago.

Yep, that was bizzarre. Seeing normally sensible people that you know well, acting out some high level grief for someone they've never met but they held in high esteem just because her husband fancied some other ugly bird. Totally nuts.

Yeah I have fairly vague memories of that but can remember it seeming to be a massive deal at the time. Difference there is people actually knew who she was and many were fans already.
@booboo yeah I think you're right. Also I see one of the vigils was organised by Alison Mau and a womans rights group and talked about "NZs attitude towards women" etc so they seem to have jumped at the chance to push their message.

The upside was there were some fantastic jokes doing the rounds afterwards.
Must have been a great time to be a florist too,

Alison Mau is an older ,less hot, more intelligent version of Lizzie Marvelly.

I hate that this young lady has tragically died.
But part of me really wants it to be found she died as a result of something other than at this bloke's hands.
Partly so the UK don't blame ME!
But mainly so grandstanders like Mau get shown up. (What does she care about men anyway? Bloody Aussie.)
Having said that on balance of probabilities I suspect there will be a trial... and it may not end well for the accused.
But let's hear the evidence first huh?
-
@booboo yeah, trial will be interesting, going to be easy for the defence lawyer to argue any jury selected has been influenced by the PMs careless words and all the hype surrounding this. I hope if he did it he gets the book thrown at him, but who knows at this point.

I'm going to rephrase that.
I think I want this not to be a murder so that we are all reminded of our system of justice being 'innocent until proven guilty'.
I've seen so much shit just assuming he's guilty. I will not be surprised if he is. But he's assumed to be guilty by so many. It's got to compromise the trial.
This will pan out how it does. But there is a fair amount of assumption of guilt so far.

I'm guessing that level of assumption is mainly fuelled by how quickly the police have nabbed someone for it.

@no-quarter having been on a very low profile case this week, to which I had never heard anything about nor would it have been expected, yet the Judge went to great lengths at the commencement and in his summing up that we were to ignore anything we might have heard or thought we knew about the case and deal only in the facts and evidence from the trial.
They also provided a new aspect, which was almost like a cheat sheet with 'bread crumbs' showing the laws relevant for the charges, helped clear things up as to what the law was looking for with regard to the charges and what we needed to believe beyond reasonable doubt to find the person guilty.
