Am I the only kiwi who has so far, not enjoyed a single one of the Jackson middle earth movies? Much like "Some Kind of Monster", I've found these movies have destroyed fond memories formed when I was much younger.

Too cheesy, too sentimental, too clean, too sappy. The Orcs are pretty fking cool, but the hobbits, humans and dwarves make me cringe.

Yeah well I couldn't stand the casting for the dwarves, Beorn, or Aragorn. And the Hobbits, too twee and Celtic.

About Time. Richard Curtis film with Rachel McAdams and Bill Nighy among others, so had high hopes, but was pretty disappointed. Those wicked one liners just weren't there, and the whole time travel thing was amusing in bits (like when the bloke jumps back a few times to ensure first night sex is the best) but kept changing all its rules and got rather dumb. And the actual story was a bit dull.

Watched St Vincent with Bill Murray last night, was ok, a bit twee but Murray was having fun as a grump and Naomi Watts was funny as a Russian hooker with a wandering accent. Melissa McCarthy managed to not be as annoying as in every movie she's in.

I kinda got the impression it wasn't going to be great when the dude rushing to tell everyone about the rogue comet karks it in a car accident in the first five minutes. But that same comet could have zoomed through the plot holes and idiotic set ups and entirely unnecessary characters that could have been cut with no problem.

I watched it solely because it has Téa Leoni in it. That alone is worth more than two out of ten.

Big Hero 6 - fucking great movie. Another great CGI film where they've got something for everyone. Good, clean fun.

Hobbit 5 Armies - Enjoyed it, but the part of Lickspittle just got too much screen time for me and fell a bit flat of they were attempting comic relief.

Loved the scene of the Dwarves going into battle but Jackson's problem has always been that he overpowered the pre-Urukhai Orcs waaaaaay too much and treated Dwarves like comic devices. The Elves, as usual, get all the fancy bullshit. They should have stayed behind the shield wall rather than breaking up the line of battle. Poncy fucks.

I've generally gotten past my angst over the way that Jackson fucked around with the original story lines, so was prepared for the disappointment I felt when he mangled the battle. However, Thorin riding off doing his own shit made no sense, and particularly taking only three companions with him. The book ending - where he and the Company ride straight into the heart of the Orcish army and taken down Azog - would have made better spectacle for me.

Tied up the ends with Legolas, Strider, and the re-emergence of Sauron/The Necromancer nicely though.

Watched Boyhood last night - for those not in the know it's the Richard Linklater movie filmed over 12 years. I thought it was great. Interesting to see character's age over time (poor Patricia Arquette didn't age as well as Ethan Hawke).

There was some really good tension in some scenes that had me on the edge of my seat but much of it was just a story about a boys life told a over a few scenes a year.

The nearly 3 hours running time flew by and there were only really a few scenes near the end that I found a bit meh (teenage angst and jibberish conversations) but they're just minor quibbles.

The boy in it was pretty good but the directors daughter who played his sister was great.

I wonder if they're going to carry on and do the next 12 years?

Begin Again: Music film made by the guys who made Once. FYI - I hated Once, hated it with a passion, didn't ever want to hear that stupid song ever again and didn't ever want to see those two actors again. Begin Agan was an enjoyable film. Stars Keira Knightly as a singer song wriiter and Mark Ruffalo as an almost washed up producer/record label exec. They make an album around the streets of New York. Some drama ensues.

Took the kids to the movies today, and because they will be seeing Big Hero 6 and Paddington during a school holiday programme, I drew the short straw and got to see Night at the Mueseum 3...was ok, some laughs, looked like it was garanteed to ne the last in the franchise, but they may have opened the door for Rebel Wilson to take it over from the awkward Ben Stiller.

I think Rebel Wilson deserves a lot of credit for the way she's gone from fat-chick-in-Aussie-culture-comedy to fat-chick-in-Hollywood.

But I can't fucking stand her.
