I’d like to see an electric ln106 hilux .

A guy here in Oz converted a hilux. Not cheap to do, and the range was shit, and the batteries were AGM, but still

Electric Hilux: An EV conversion trailblazer racks up 100,000km on 10 amp charger

The story of one trailblazing Aussie's all-electric Hilux conversion, and his plans to combine his family's home and vehicle into one power system.

It will get cheaper and easier though . You’ll be able to go out for a tramp/fish/hunt or whatever and charge the batteries from solar panels too.

Can I interest Sir in the Bollinger B1?

Yeah I’ve seen that , that thing is pretty cool. You don’t pick an off-road vehicle based on looks fortunately.

I’d imagine the low end torgue would be pretty popular amongst people who are into rock crawling too .

Looks like Meccano does a Land Rover

The land rover comparison is a bit unfair It doesn’t look piss poorly built and horribly unreliable .

Do they still have that reputation these days?

Has anyone done a study to work out the environmental cost of making batteries for electric cars?

Speaking purely about the preferred chemistries for lithium batteries (and there are a few) - many studies and research have been done, and their conclusions usually depends who pays for them 🙂

One stat that I remember is that a Model S becomes completely carbon neutral at something like 70,000km - provided the energy mix used to power it is majority (highly? 100%?) renewable. That includes all parts of the car, not just the batteries.

Tesla have a battery recycling program that they're apparently using to great effect, but I believe there are still waste products. Contrast that to lead-acid which is nearly 100% recyclable and is the primary reason it is still so popular. We have them running the forklifts in our warehouses and AGM is still pretty robust and at a good price point - tho they're far easier to mismanage and fuck up so you have to know your shit.

One issue to date with Lithium Ion batteries has been the cobalt, which is mined in places like Democratic Republic of Congo which brings all sorts of ethical issues to the table - Blood Cobalt, anyone?

Thankfully there are multiple developments in cobalt-free lithium batteries for both EVs and domestic storage applications. That should also make it cheaper, though price drops at volume of some of the factory proposals out in the field. The CHinese are understandably going apeshit for electric propulsion and renewables + Nuclear as they seek to lower their pollution issues.

Did zee Germans ever build Land Rovers once they bought the company? I'd expect they would have ironed out any reliability issues

Thread divergence. That was the original Freelander. Piece of crap. The F2 is OK.
We got a second hand no frills one for our travel over here and thrash the shit out of it, taking very little care on maintenance. Have had no problems except one of the auto locking door actuators (which are a bitch in lots of cars).
Slightly back to topic. Glad we have treated the Landrover as semi disposable as it is a diesel and we purchased it just before everything diesel in the uk went from the desired option to the worst evil known to man (and councils). Be very careful about what authorities say/promise regarding EVs. They will change their mind on a whim and all those charge points/ parking incentives etc will be “not their responsibility “

I've had two clients and a mate own the first generation freelander and all had the same thing happen . The four wheel drive shat itself and the cost of fixing it was so extortionate they left it as a front wheel drive. They are getting pretty old now so definitely worth avoiding.

If rover hadn't done the dirty on Honda they would have had a badge engineered version of the crv instead of the piece of shit they designed and probably wouldn't be owned by Tata.

They realised the mistake eventually and changed the F2 to a stock vehicle using the same platform as Volvo.
I only knew all this because I had to do a little research when buying. I was also anti Landrover based in the poor rep they had.

Yeah, there's very little rover in there, its a mix of mondeo and volvo from when Ford briefly owned and realised it was a basket case and sold it after two years to Tata

I like the old school landies but wouldn't want to own one. This is another conversion to a series two, something like this would be a cool project

The anti diesel thing is horribly mis reported. It's about old diesels, anything relatively modern is fine. If you are driving an 02 diesel, then you are probably in the shit (For central london only) otherwise ok.

One thing that has gone relatively quiet recently is hydrogen power. With water only emissions that was predicted to be the next big thing. I guess extracting hydrogen has proved to be as difficult as predicted.

Hydrogen is very much on people's radar. In aus the first step is establishing standards, that hasn't even been done yet.

We could supply a hydrogen bus, but at a million + a unit it's not going to have many takers.
