@canefan Aw come on, Bridges fought really hard, squeaking about slushy machines.
In the game of optics, simple Simon is blind
Wait till @siam posts photos of Jacinda carrying Clarke over the threshold

@jegga I read the report last night, was quite interesting. The recommended extra amount is about 1.9% of GDP, so it's certainly a bit, but it's not that much relative to the size of the NZ economy.
I've had a bit to do with the welfare system for relatives lately, and it's clear that the system doesn't have holes, it has gaping chasms, and that it's hard to navigate even if someone is good at navigating bureaucracy.

@taniwharugby Certainly plenty of people in that category. We were eligible for the accommodation supplement for years after we canned it, but it was less than $10 per week, so wasn't worth the effort.
Some of it is poor design though - it's one thing to skip small amounts because it's not worth the hassle, but it's quite another to have a 25% abatement rate for both working for families and the accommodation supplement, leading to a cumulative abatement rate of 50%, plus tax. For families who qualify for both payments, that usually means at least 69c out of every extra $1 is lost, and for someone with a student loan and a salary of $50,000, that's 93.39c from every extra $1.
Some of the costs were changing those abatement rates and thresholds to lessen that effect.

I don’t think a dope referendum and Jacinda tying the knot is enough to distract from this farce .

@jegga Hope you are right...but I doubt it,
Had a visit back home last week, farmers hate her but many town and city dwellers I know have had the 'hijab' pulled over their eyes. Won't be until the next go around that people wake up to her especially without a decent opposition leader.Had a chat with my 95 year old great aunt who is still sharp as a tack (Think Olenna Tyrell for personality type) calls her 'the little idiot communist'. Made my day.

@Rembrandt majority of those in the business world I talk to (I do mostly try to avoid political discussions with people) are not fans.

Yeah I don't think she's particularly popular with most people, and the constant fluff from the media just annoys people. Although she did better than expected in the last election, that was largely due to the Greens implosion and they still got thoroughly beaten by National.
One thing is for sure though, Bridges is not the man to take National forward. Might be about time to cast him aside and install someone that at least has some leadership qualities.

Polling suggests you're wrong about Cindy's popularity.
Labour's win had much more to do with Nats inability to find a coalition partner than nay implosion by Greens
Bridge isn't going to win the next election for Nats, but who is? The drums keep beating for Crusher but is she really going to win National any support that they don't already have. Much as the right of the party love her she turns off a lot of voters too. She probably will take National into the next election but there's no need to change leaders just yet. Collins is known by the electorate if you change to her - you change 6 mths out. Anyone with a real ambition to lead the Nats will be biding their time waiting until post 2020

I like Crusher, but I don't think her image is going to resonate with the swing voters. I still think Nikki Kaye would be a possible Jacinda Killer, I mean she's already beaten her twice before right?

Wait till the wedding is set in stone and a date is announced. It’s going to be fucking everywhere.
Tbf I think 90% of the constant fawning all things st Cindy is because our media seem so obsessed by celebrity rather then real world.
While she no doubt enjoys the attention and understands how personality politics works and is one of her advantages, im willing to bet at least part of her would like to be taken seriously or at least respected the way Aunty Helen was. -

Yeah I didn't meant to imply Labour won because the Greens imploded, just that they took a lot of their votes which meant they finished higher than they would have. Agree it's a lack of a coalition partner that killed National.
Like you I'm not convinced Crusher will be able to get enough of the middle to go National. @canefan Kaye seems like a good option to me.
What are the chances of Winston hanging up his boots? NZF collapsing would change the dynamics of the next election.
