@Stargazer said in Chiefs v Crusaders (Suva):

Chiefs captain Sam Cane will be free of any minute restriction for Saturday's game against the Crusaders in Fiji.

Coach Colin Cooper confirmed the team's talisman would be let loose in Suva, as the Chiefs look to resuscitate their near-terminal playoffs hopes in a must-win match against the defending champion Crusaders.

The fixture will be the All Blacks flanker's third since his return from a five-month recovery from a neck fracture. He came off the bench in the loss to the Blues, before making his first start - albeit on a 50-minute limit - in the win over the Reds on Friday.

The squad will be without the services of hooker Nathan Harris this week, who's off on his All Blacks-allotted rest. Bradley Slater will move on to the bench as cover for Liam Coltman.

All Blacks lock Brodie Retallick will also play no part, but Cooper expects to have him back in the selection frame against the Rebels in Melbourne following next week's bye.

    Stuff

Edited to add that I don't understand that sentence about Liam Coltman. What's he got to do with this game?

    Polwart?

@Yeetyaah It is the ground closest to where my son lives (only a couple of KM away). Just waiting for the phone call to come uttering those magic words "can you send me" so he can buy tickets for him and his mother!!!!!

The only tickets left on the Chiefs website are $200 for the grandstand seat.

@Yeetyaah Ouch, well I had better turn my phone off then. Hopefully there will be some embankment seats left on the other side of the ground over by the seaward end. Pity the Hurricanes are in Africa as that makes it difficult to organise my conatct there to jack up a couple of the Chief's players allocation tickets!

Yeah it’s a massive fuck you to the real fans.

Similar to when the crusaders scheduled home games in Napier a few years back. Home games should be played at home

With @Stargazer in the stands they were the homiest of home games.

Although, weren't those games a direct result of the earthquake, if the earthquake didn't happen they wouldn't have been organised?

Yeah you’re right. I still don’t agree with it. didn’t have to go to Napier. Nelson is still a home game.

I think the first Fiji game against the chiefs was also a home game for us too.

Did the CEO discuss it back in the day? Maybe Nelson was unavailable or they weren't confident of getting a crowd for multiple games? It does seem odd, but then again any home game somewhere else is odd - the Warriors haven't played Manly at Brookvale in years.

Pretty sure they said it was for financial reasons.... I think playing the chiefs made it worse for me, it was basically a home crowd for them and if I recall correctly we lost pretty comprehensively

    5 Sam Whitelock (c)
    6 Whetu Douglas
    7 Billy Harmon
    8 Kieran Read
    9 Mitchell Drummond
    10 Richie Mo'unga
    11 Braydon Ennor
    12 Ryan Crotty (vc)
    13 Jack Goodhue
    14 Sevu Reece
    15 David Havili

    Reserves:
    16 Ben Funnell
    17 Isi Tu'ungafasi
    18 George Bower
    19 Mitchell Dunshea
    20 Jordan Taufua
    21 Bryn Hall
    22 Mitchell Hunt
    23 George Bridge

Head Coach Scott Robertson has named his team for the match, which includes a return to the starting side for Kieran Read, Billy Harmon, Mitch Drummond and Braydon Ennor. Ben Funnell and Mitch Dunshea also feature in the match day 23 this week.

Harmon has earned a start this week in place of Vice-Captain Matt Todd, who has been rested. Read's return sees Whetukamokamo Douglas move from No. 8 to the blindside, and Jordan Taufua shift to the reserves. The two changes in the backline from the side that took the field against the Blues last Saturday night see Bryn Hall and George Bridge move to the bench, making way for Drummond and Ennor to start this game.

"Fijian fans love their rugby, and the locals always provide a warm welcome to the team whenever we play here," Robertson said.

"While this is a Chiefs home game, we are fortunate to have plenty of support in Suva, and look forward to the opportunity to connect with Crusaders fans over the next few days. We love playing in the heat, it's something we'll embrace in Fiji and make the most of the experience."

I hope the Chiefs put up a few kicks for Ennor, because I'D like to see his ability under the high ball. If he can show capability there he'll strengthen his future AB chances, maybe even his WC potential.
